Long Beach Half Marathon – Race Recap

As I shared after the race on Sunday, Kyle and I both ran the Long Beach Half-Marathon this past weekend – not the full marathon as I had originally planned.

This was my 2nd half-marathon – the first being the Monster Dash in the fall of 2011 – and I was definitely much less prepared for this race than my first.

I steadily trained for the full marathon from May-August but after the move to Chicago, starting a new job and finding out about some health issues, my training basically stopped. I didn’t stop running altogether but I wasn’t running more than 4-5 miles 3 times per week. Definitely not marathon (or half-marathon) training runs!

Anyways, onto the race recap!

We woke up bright and early and fueled with bananas and peanut butter before heading over to the race. Our hotel – The Long Beach Courtyard Marriot – was only a few blocks from the race start and finish lines!

Our race was supposed to start at 7:30am but because of the masses (like 10,000+ – not kidding!) of people running the race, we didn’t actually cross the start line until 8am and we were one of the first groups to start!

The overall course was gorgeous. We had great views of Long Beach and the Pacific Ocean but man was the course crowded. We were weaving in and out of crowds, trying not to trip ourselves in order to pass other runners throughout the ENTIRE race. I expect this to happen during the first 2-3 miles of every race as people overestimate their pace but passing people for 13.1 miles is a little ridiculous.

Because of our delayed start time, we made a quick bathroom pit-stop around Mile 3. That 1-minute break was much needed and I was actually happy to be able to focus on running rather than my full bladder!

Since I was following Kyle’s lead throughout the race (This was his 1st half-marathon and since I didn’t really have a training plan/goal, I decided to stick with him as a running buddy.) we made quite a few water stops over the next several miles. I didn’t drink at all of them – I don’t like the way water feels sloshing around my belly while running. He also requested a few walking breaks – one around Miles 7, 8 and 10.

Once we hit Mile 10, I knew I could not walk again or I’d never be able to start up running and make it across the finish line so I continued on ahead of Kyle.

As a side note, I’ve decided that running buddies are key to long runs and races. Those last 3.1 miles were killer and I hit a major wall that probably would have been much easier to overcome had I been running with someone.

Speaking of hitting a wall – I want to give a shout out and a HUGE thank you to all of the race spectators. Your cheering, funny signs, bite-sized candy and orange slices made those last few miles bearable and also made it possible for me to finish the race! Who knew that a granny telling each runner that they were a sexy beast, a tiny Milky Way and sucking the juice out of an orange slice could fuel me for a few miles??!

On Mile 11 (or Mile 24 for her…), Monica from Run Eat Repeat zoomed past me! I love her blog and was pretty much in blog-celebrityville for those few moments. You can give me the Creeper McCreeperton award for the race because I snapped a photo of her as she passed by.

Anyways, I eventually made it across the finish line and man, why is that last mile always so emotional??! Spectators are cheering, you’re delirious and I always have to focus on breathing in order to not break down into tears, hyperventilate and/or collapse from sheer exhaustion.

My official time was 2:18 – slower than my first half-marathon time of 1:52 but still okay considering that I didn’t train and haven’t ran more then 4-5 miles in the past month.

Kyle’s official time was 2:23! I was impressed considering that he came to the race after spending a week in Russia, it being his first race of this length and only making it up to a 9-mile run during his training. Yay for Kyle!

After donning my medal (they gave me the full marathon medal since my bib was for the full) and shoving a bag of Cheez-Its, a Rice Krispy Treat, a banana and fruit snacks down my trap, Kyle crossed the finish line. And yes, I was able to eat that much sugary-carby goodness in less than 5 minutes. My body craves some major carbs to replenish its energy stock after a race of that length and I couldn’t chew the food fast enough!

Once we got our finisher’s photo, we wobbled back to the hotel to clean up before gorging ourselves with pizza and beer. Typical.

So what are my overall thoughts?

It was a beautiful course but I just can’t recommend the half to anyone. It was way too crowded to be enjoyable and probably actually quite dangerous at some points because of thousands of runners. I actually overheard a spectator call us a herd of wildebeests. (I’m sorry sir but the only time I’ll respond to the term beast is when the word sexy is in front of it!) I think the full is another story – I’d love to try that one out, maybe next year??!


I’m not sore in the least. (Pre-publishing edit – I was actually sore 2 days after the race but only my glutes… apparently they can power me through 13.1 miles ;) ) I’m really shocked about this considering my lack of training. It just goes to show that other types of fitness like Body Pump, Yoga and Cardio Kickboxing keep you in damn good shape and are just as important as actual running when preparing for a race!

After being able to finish this race, I think there’s something to be said for under-training. Yes, you need to be able to run and be in great cardiovascular health to run long distances but your muscles should not be fatigued. My muscles were fresh and ready to run and that they did. I also have a little bit more “fluff” right now than I’ve had the past year(s) – moving and stress do a number on the bod – and that probably powered me through the race as well… and don’t worry, I’m workin’ on it… with Body Pump and Cardio Kickboxing on my side, I’m determined to be back into my normal shape by the holidays!

How’s that for a super long post? If you’re still here, I’m glad because I really wanted to share with you my thoughts about the race and running a half-marathon without training!

  1. Congrats girl!!! You did awesome, especially considering you didn’t really train that much!

    I’ve never run a long distance race before – the farthest I’ve ever run was 10km last summer, and then shortly after that my knee started giving me problems, so I never got past that distance. I would love to run a half marathon in the future though!

    • Thanks Chelsea! I was pretty proud considering my lack of training :) I had never run a long distance until 2011 when I decided to just pick up it for the heck of it. Hopefully your knee doesn’t give you any problems if you decide to pick it up again!

  2. Congrats! My HM goal time is as close to 2 hours as possible so maybe I should try your casual training approach! JK I def need the training to help me mentally power through. But I agree that you can do so much more than you think without completely training.

    • Thank you, Heather! The marathoners were supposed to start at 6am but ended up starting 15-20 minutes for an undetermined cause… strange? So I think she finished around 3:50ish for marathon time.

  4. Wait I want to run a race where a granny tells me I’m sexy! And gives me milky ways. And finish the race with cheez it’s. You had it made! I hit the wall at the same time as Kyle did. Miles 7, 8, and 10 were the hardest for me and I stopped and walked at the water stops for them too. Hey, as long as we finished :) I think under training is WAY better than overtraining. I didn’t run nearly as many miles as I did for the half in May and I felt infinitely better even though my time was the same. Your body is less fatigued so it has more energy to make it that far! Anyways I’m glad you mostly enjoyed it minus the crowds and there’s no better way to celebrate than pizza.

    • Haha – right??! Californians are apparently the best spectators EVER! Walls are the worst as are fatigued muscles. I actually recovered much quicker after this race (and could actually walk…) because I wasn’t overtraining for 3 months prior!

  5. Great job to you and Kyle! I totally agree there is some benefit to undertraining in terms of running if you’re training your body in other ways. It’s a testament to your strength that you get whip out 13.1 miles with very little training. You better be proud of that because I damn well would be!!!! So fun you saw Monica :)

  6. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, lady! I was curious to hear about which race you were going to run and how it went, and I think you did awesome given the circumstances.

    I’e never run more than 5 miles at once, but I have to admit that hearing all the talk of running and racing lately has really given me the running bug. Who knows… I might just end up lacing up those running shoes again :D

    • Thanks Amanda! Running bugs… those are the most dangerous of bugs. You better brace yourself for some serious illness ;) We definitely need to chat if you decide to start running again! I think I’m definitely going to change up my training from here on out – more focus on cross-training in order to prevent injury, build strength and prevent boredom!

  8. Yessss I’ve been so excited for this post! Great job to both of you! That is so frustrating though having to weave in and out of the crowd the entire race! Like you said, you can expect that within the first couple of miles but not the whole race. That would drive me nutso. Next year I think a half marathon is going to have to go on my to-do list!
    I did run a half marathon two summers ago. I was in a pretty bad flare-up and it was silly of me to run it, but I did. It was miserable. I want to prove to myself that I can have fun with it but I need to make sure I am in the healthiest state possible.

I absolutely believe in the power of crosstraining when it comes to running – being able to pull that out shows that all the other workouts you’ve been doing definitely allowed you to maintain some awesome strength and endurance.     • Thanks Sam! Cross-training is key and I’ve decided that for my marathon (I WILL run one next year, darn it!) that I’m only going to run 3x/week and cross train 3x/week. It’ll prevent burnout and injuries and just keep me happier :)

I had to laugh at the picture of your peanut butter. At first, it looked like there was a straw sticking out and I though, oh, what a unique way to consume peanut butter….lol

  18. i loved reading about your race adventures! and i love that you snapped a pic of monica. way to rock a 1/2 marathon with your hubby! my one and only full marathon was done similarly. i trained but too early and then ran one 8 miler 2 weeks before. the cross training totally helps! congrats becky!

    • Thank you, Kendra! I plan on actually making it through an entire full next year, as long as I can get my iron levels back to normal before then :) I really want to cross that finish line!

    • Thanks Kelly! Yes, training long distances alone can be the WORST! And honestly, when I actually trained for my first half, I walked a lot. I would make it to mile 7 or 8 and then run a mile, walk 2 minutes… And I didn’t end up walking at all during that half! Adrenaline does wonders :)

    • Thanks Amy! You can DEFINITELY do your first half without running this week. Your muscles (and knee) will be well-rested and you’ll probably run better by taking a little rester! Next time I train for a race, I am only going to run 3x/week and focus on cross-training the rest of the days. I just get burnt out much too easily and I’d rather enjoy the process than dread it!

    • Bathroom breaks during races are ridic! I wouldn’t have had to need one if we would have started on time, ha! And I feel you on the line… we ran by the first 3 because there were crazy lines and I didn’t think it would be worth it.

I’m hoping to finish within a few minutes of my original 1/2 time (faster or slower is fine), but I don’t want to be too far off…lol BUT I remember seeing the 13 mile sign and getting really teary.   29. Way to go on minimal training :) And congrats to Kyle as well for his finish. Be proud. You ran a 1/2 marathon! No easy feet when trained for and even harder when hardly trained for.

    I hate crowds and the weaving and such. Was there no corrals or start waves? For something that big, I would expect so. Did the marathoners start with you too or did they have a different start time. Most races that have multiple distances (that I have ran) make sure the distances each have their own start time so there isn’t mass congestion.

    Longest distance I have ever run was 20 miles, this past Saturday for marathon training. Runner’s high to the extreme!

    • Thanks Sonia! There were definitely start waves but about 200 people started with each one and they weren’t clearly defined by time/pace. We started in Wave 5 (I think…) and I think there were at least 15 more waves behind us! You’re going to rock your upcoming marathon – 20 miles, get it!

I feel your pain about dodging and weaving around people, my race had 11,000 people in it and it was exactly the same way. I admire your ability to run and take photos at the same time. I never run with my phone or a camera so can’t even think of doing this but I think I’d be too puffed to even attempt it anyway, that or my sweaty running hands would probably drop and smash my phone ;)

  35. Congrats on finishing the half marathon! You did awesome from not training much the past few months. My husband did the same thing with the Chicago marathon a few years ago. He signed up early, and the furthest he ever ran during training was 12 miles once (I was rollerblading with him, haha). I was actually worried for him during the race, but he was fine! Look forward to reading more about your time in Chicago :)

  46. I totally just searched Long Beach Half marathon recap and I am so happy I found your blog! What a great recap! I ran that race too as my first ever half and loved reading your experience and seeing your photos from the course to relive it! Congratulations. Excited to be a new follower. :)

      • I never saw you asked me a question….yes, I actually live about 25 minutes from Long Beach. It was such a beautiful course…I mean I have nothing to compare to since it was my first lol, but can’t beat running along the beach! You’ll have to come out here for another So Cal race!!
