Girl and the Goat, Froyo, and Sushi – A weekend of eats!

Hi there :) How was your weekend?

It was a great one for us here in Chicago.

Friday night (I am using the term “night” loosely here as our reservations were at 4:45pm!), Kyle and I finally visited Girl and the Goat! We also apparently walked right by Stephanie Izard but since I am so far removed (I have never really talked about it here but I have zero interest in any type of celebrity or their gossip…) from pop culture, Kyle had to point it out after the fact, haha!

We tried 5 different courses including: broccoli-cheese bread (this will be recreated ASAP!), beet salad, trout tartare, goat empanadas and pig face (yep, that’s the egg one!). Everything was very good but our verdict?

… Not worth the hype. (Let the hate comments begin… ;) ) Yes, the food was good. Yes, the food was innovative and creative. However, it wasn’t any better than any of the other restaurants here in Chicago and definitely not worth the 3-month wait to get in. With that being said, I still think it’s worth checking out if you’re visiting Chicago and can get on the reservation list!

Instead of getting dessert at GATG, we decided froyo was a must. I hadn’t had froyo since last year – like November-ish, and it was just as delicious as I remember ;)

Since we ate ridiculously early, I was ready for bed by 7:30pm. #truestory So Kyle and Mitchell stayed up to watch the Cyclones win while I went to bed at the late hour of 8pm…

Because of that early bedtime, I was up and ready to go early Saturday morning.

Before 10am, Kyle and I had the entire apartment cleaned, laundry done, quiche in the oven and made our weekly run to Target. Wowzers! Being productive felt amazing so we decided to cheers over mimosas while the quiche was cooking ;)

The rest of the day included a trip to the vet for some booster shots for Mitchell, a nap and a new kettle bell workout at my gym.

Then came sushi night with friends. I wore stripes because it is basically my signature pattern at this point ;)

Sushi Para 2 has all-you-can-eat sushi for about $20/person and we always leave regretting the amount of sushi we ordered. There were 5 of us and we ordered this…

And this.

Yikes. Needless to say, I am STILL full, my fingers are still puffy from the salt, and my sushi craving has been quenched for at least a little while ;)

This morning, I slept in until the late hour of 8am, cleaned up the wine glasses from our pre-sushi festivities the night before, did a little blogging (I have a delicious recipe comin’ at ya tomorrow!) and then hit up the gym for some cardio kickboxing. The class was FULL and it got super steamy, super quick but thankfully, I sweated out alllll of the soy sauce from the night before!

I refueled with a tasty, gluten-free snack and an iced soy latte post-class. The Gluten Free Bar in chocolate peanut butter (don’t tell me you’re surprised…) was SO good and I will definitely be stocking up on more.

The rest of the afternoon was spent at lunch with family followed by a 2-hour nap. It was amazing even though I probably won’t sleep at all tonight.

I hope y’all had fabulous weekends – I can’t wait to hear about them in the comments!

Tell me one thing you did this weekend. Have you ever visited a popular restaurant only to not be overly impressed?

  1. I took two naps, and had brunch with some of my besties. That’s how you do it!

    • Naps + brunch… A perfect weekend! Seriously, napping is basically my favorite thing at the moment, haha!

  2. Yes, I’ve been to way too many over hyped restaurants unfortunately with partners from my firm. I think the sushi looks better than their food quite honestly. I haven’t had sushi in forever. One good thing this weekend? Hmm…I bought a bunch of new gym gear on clearance. Score!!!

    • Oh my gosh, I LOVE dueling piano bars, Katie! I haven’t been to one in ages. Let me add that to my list!

  4. Fun weekend!! We had forum tonight too!

  8. I love those days where I am just so productive and knock things out like it’s nobody’s business! Hey, that kinda describes today. ;)
Man oh man have I been craving sushi lately!

  10. I think your wknd sounded really fun! Mine was great—between time with my guy, doing some extra organizing, ordering pizza and enjoying that at home, buying a new tablet–yay:) and baking delish oatmeal+chocolate chip+pb cookies. I was super glad to get 2 naps in this wknd! I’m still kind of tired-ha.

  11. Love that dress – it’s so cute! Sounds like you had a great weekend!

  12. OH MY GOSH THAT SUSHI BOAT. I havent eaten dinner yet and might need to order sushi right now.

  13. I’m the same.exact.way with being totally removed when it comes to celebrity gossip. I have no idea what’s going on with anyone, and to be honest, I don’t even know who’s famous anymore with the crazy amount of reality TV shows out there. Plus, the stars look so different in real life than they do all glammed up.

This weekend: went snowboarding after going far too long without it. It was fabulous.

  14. Where did you get Domaine Carneros champagne?! That’s the place in Napa that T’s mom used to take me on birthdays/special occasions!

That looks like an INSANE amount of sushi- I’m jealy!

    • Kyle found it at Binny’s, a local liquor shop around Chicago. We both loved the bottle and picked up more on Saturday afternoon!

  15. Can we please add the sushi place to the list of places we go to when I visit C town? Let’s also make a reservation at girl + the goat for the sake of it.

Restaurants like that can be so hit and miss- so far the handful I’ve been to here have been misses!

  16. AYCE sushi will always be my favourite…even if I can’t move off the couch for several hours afterwards ;-) so good!
And good to know about GATG…I remember thinking that I could get a reservation when I was in Chicago and 2012, and ya…no. Now I don’t feel as disappointed ;-)

  17. Did I read that correctly? A three month wait to get into a restaurant? Are you for realz? Seriously? What?! Is Chicago known for its food?

And who the hell is Stephanie Izard??? I am also removed from pop culture and don’t give a hoot about celebrities and whatnot.

Anyway, that wooden boat of sushi looks awwwwesome! I am allergic but the presentation is fun!

  18. The best part of my weekend was snuggling on the couch with Luke!

  19. Holy schnikeys that is a boat load of sushi!! Too punny? ;) I went to a buffet this weekend literally just to have all you can eat sushi. I ate entirely too much salmon sashimi #worthit And I was thinking (after seeing your photo) how I should have mimosas “just because” a lot more often. Cleaning an apartment from top to bottom is definitely reason enough for a reward.

  20. Love the dress and the sushi boat!! I am having my sushi bowl again for lunch because of that hardcore sushi craving that came over me when you posted that sushi boat. I had a lovely weekend hiking, doing acroyoga (!?!) with Denver blends, and making smoothies like its 80 degrees out (except it’s 50). Haha I am ready for summer!

  21. The cauliflower at Girl and the Goat is epic! Also, there’s a Sushi Para in the suburbs and it’s great. My favorite suburban all you can eat sushi place is Sushi City in Downers Grove. The sweet potato roll is to die for.

  22. You look so good in that dress!
And man do you have me craving sushi like crazy!

When we were in Chicago, we saw the Girl and the Goat on Yelp and almost went- I guess we would have been turned away anyway because of the wait! Instead, we went to The Purple Pig, which has since been added to my list of favorite restaurants ever. Have you been there?

This weekend was all about soaking up as much of the 60 degree weather as possible by getting drinks and dinner outdoors, wine tasting, and the best part: taxes. ;)

  23. All I can say is I am SOOOOOOOOOOO jealous of all that sushi!!!!! I’ve been craving it lately…. So far I’ve only satisfied it with TJ sushi…. I’ll for sure get some yummy sushi before I start my 24 DC in may!!

  25. I am celebrity obsessed, probably because that’s the industry I am going to work in. Sorry the girl and the goat wasn’t as good as you thought it would be – I hate when that happens. I’m on a vacay from eating out because my fingers are seriously swollen from winter as is :( like my rings won’t fit swollen. It’s awful!
Laura Dembowski recently posted…CHARM IT! Review and Giveaway! My Profile

    • Oh wow – my fingers always decrease at least one size in the winter but tend to swell up from salt. Hopefully it’ll warm up soon and your fingers will be back to normal!

  26. That’s a little disappointing about Girl and the Goat! There is a resto here in PGH that everyone loves – I went and just thought ‘eh’. I’ve started to go into things with lower expectations haha. Oh and you look GORG in that dress!! xo
