#81 Treat Yourself Tuesday

Another Tuesday, another Treat Yourself Tuesday! The weeks are flying :)

I’m off to teach my Tuesday morning BODYPUMP class in a few, so let’s get right to it!

WE BOUGHT A HOUSE!!! That’s pretty much a treat for the next few years right there, haha! I was sweatin’ up until the end – nothing like waiting last minute on a few documents from the sellers, but – as always, everything worked out and the home is now ours :) As is a big ol’ mortgage, LOL.

First we bought a house and then we started knocking shiz down – We don’t like to waste any time here in Naples. The ugly wall that separated the kitchen from the living area is now GONE and yesterday, the tile that we will be replacing was removed. Wahoo! I swung by yesterday morning to keep my eye on the progress and our contractor (Random fact – His name is Vito and for some reason, I really like that name… If Mitchell ever gets a FURRY brother, Vito might have to be his name.) told me that the flooring should be installed by the end of the week. Things are moving right along!

If the flooring is in, that means we get to set up the nursery this weekend – Another treat! And by we, I mean Kyle ;) Actually, he might be busy scrubbing the bathrooms so I may be assembling the crib and bookshelf myself. Believe it or not, but I’m pretty handy when I need to be. Here is how the nursery currently stands…

A non-house treat was this delicious Asian salad from Panera on Saturday night. I had been craving Chinese food all day but it always makes me feel awful (even though it tastes good for 5 minutes!), so I decided to treat my body to feeling good that night and quench my craving with a healthier option. It hit the spot!

I also bought ALL the baby things from Target last week. We received our completion coupons and I filled my cart to the brim with baby items :) We still need a bassinet (I know which one I’m going to get, just need to order it…), a few more boxes of diapers and a changing pad for the dresser. Other than that, I think we’re set! Unless MJ decides to come out around 6 pounds then we will need more NB sized clothing but I’ll worry about that when/if it happens.

A new “coming home” outfit. While the navy anchor onesie was cute, it was BIG and it was made of sweater material so I was afraid it would be too hot and scratchy for a May baby in Florida. I found this adorable elephant onesie at the Gymboree outlet – OMG. Seriously, how cute is it?!

And because Gymboree was having a sale… I also got MJ his first pair of swim trunks! They are sized 0-3 months and are the tiniest things I’ve ever seen. LOL – So cute. We will have to dip his feeties in the pool this summer so he can wear this adorableness :)

I haven’t treated myself to these shoes yet, but I really like them! They can be my cool mom shoes, right? I can’t justify $78 but I have them bookmarked for a day when I need some retail therapy.

Finally, I’m still fitting in my workouts and it is such a treat! They honestly make me feel so much better and I think they are the key to why my pregnancy has been fairly “easy” on me.

Whew! For the sake of everyone reading, I’m going to split this into a few posts. I’ll start by answering topics 1 and 2 today :)

1. What the heck are you doing with your life?

GOOD QUESTION. Isn’t that something we all ask ourselves?! ;)

  • I have no plans to return to Corporate America post-baby. There are a few reasons for this… First of all, I hated it. Secondly, there aren’t really any corporations here in Naples. And third, I am able to generate an income in other ways so I don’t need to report to the man.
  • My decision to leave was pretty simple. Kyle and I decided to relocate to Florida for his career so me keeping my job in Chicago was pretty much out of the question. (Also, I would have left regardless of our move… I was planning on attending a full-time CPT school in Chicago had we stayed, but because of our move, I chose to do the NASM self-study instead.) Everyone tends to think CA is the place to be for career and financial success, but I disagree. While I loved my career at Target in Minnesota (I didn’t love my next CA job but that story is for another day…), I always felt like something just wasn’t right. I didn’t like working hours that someone else determined. I didn’t like limited annual raises that barely covered the increase in cost of living. I didn’t like the lack of job security <– We are all made to think CA is a secure environment but each day I see more and more layoff announcements in the news. And while I really did like my managers, I didn’t like not being my own boss. Sure, the paychecks were awesome, but I always felt stressed and strapped for time and like something was missing. It just wasn’t the ideal environment for me.
  • Nope and I don’t ever plan on it. Blogging started out as a hobby for me and I plan on keeping it that way :) I enjoy it and I think if I turned into into sometime full-time, I would feel pressured and my posts would be unnatural and forced. I like to keep it fun here for me and for you!
  • I make money in a few ways… the blog does bring in some money from advertisements, partnerships, and sponsored posts, AdvoCare (more on that in the next section), group fitness, and – later this fall – I will be opening my own personal training/group fitness business.
  • Kyle works in IT. He works mainly with SAP but also other computer-software systems – High level, he helps manufacturing sites implement new software (SAP) into their production processes. His education background is in Industrial Engineering and I met him while we were both in Iowa State’s MBA program.
  • NO, I will not be a stay-at-home mom! Yes, that is meant to be a strong statement (and nothing against you SAH mamas out there), but it really just isn’t for me. Do I want to work full-time? No. But I need to be able to get away for parts of the day/week in order to maintain my sanity. While I obviously complete most of my “work” at home, being able to have that adult interaction is important to me and I plan on keeping that a priority in my future. My plans for the future are a few bullet points up :)

2. AdvoCare

  • There are A TON of AdvoCare products that are safe for pregnant and nursing mamas. I’ve mentioned it before but I take many of them daily – Spark, Rehydrate, Catalyst, OmegaPlex, CalciumPlus, CorePlex + Iron, AdvoBars, VO2 Prime, Probiotic Restore – to name a few. (You can find a full list here.) Not many people know this, but ALL of Advo’s products are developed and researched by a medical board. It’s a team of medical doctors, registered dietitians, PhD’s and other people who are a heck of a lot smarter and more informed on product safety than I am ;) The products are then tested by a 3rd party company to ensure safety. Obviously, I took the products I listed above to my OBGYN for approval, but I feel 100% safe taking these products during pregnancy, nursing and beyond.
  • Whenever I’m asked to list my favorites, I can barely narrow it down to 15, LOL. I’ll keep it to 5 for this post ;)
    • Spark – duh…
    • Catalyst – An amazing amino acid supplement that helps to maintain/build lean muscle mass which means you burn more calories each day while keeping those long and lean muscles. Boom.
    • O2Gold – Holla at me my fellow runners! This is basically a 3rd lung in a bottle. Get it now. Trust me.
    • Muscle Gain – 26g of high quality protein that taste like heaven – Awesome in smoothies, protein pancakes, or just mixed with water. Show me those guns.
    • Nighttime Recovery – If you’ve ever had a painful day after a long run or heavy lifting sesh, this will be your jam. While it doesn’t take away the day after pain 100%, it makes it manageable so you can function like a normal human.
    • Rehydrate – Okay, okay… I know I said 5 but I have to talk about this guy! It’s always hot in Florida, but as we’re approaching summer for the rest of y’all, this will become your go-to. A sugar-free sports drink that keeps you hydrated and those muscle cramps at bay. It’s a winner!
  • I think I’m going to do a vlog on this in the future so I’ll *try* keep it high level here… Like most of you, I had seen AdvoCare around but didn’t know much about it. Last January (2014), my friend Lauren asked if I wanted to join her for a 24DC. After some initial hesitation, I decided to go for it because Lauren was super nice, her results were incredible, and I did want/need to lose some of that holiday fluff I had hanging around. Plus, between the awful Chicago winter and not loving my job, I was feeling a little lost in life and wanted something to boost my mood. Fast forward 24 days later – I had a ridiculous amount of energy, a new love for Spark, my clothes fit again, and I was totally sold on this Advo thing. I signed up as a distributor because I wanted a discount (who wants to pay full price for Spark!?) and had no intentions of selling any product. The funny thing is, people noticed something about me after those 24 days. I was happy and glowing and had a new outlook on life. I began to receive questions about what I was doing to look and feel so great (and how the heck did I have energy to wake up at 4:30am to workout!?) I’d share Spark with friends, they’d fall in love with it and want to join the AdvoClub too. By just sharing with friends that asked, I was making enough to pay for my products and that was enough for me! Money to support my new addiction? I wasn’t going to turn that down, LOL. Well, after attending a few Advo events (and the fact that I was still not loving my job), I decided to become just a little more intentional about AdvoCare. I focused on who I could help – who needed to improve their health or their energy levels or wanted a fitness boost or heck, needed some extra money? When my focus shifted to helping others (rather than how I could help myself), my business started booming. Turns out, our country is in a health crisis. We’re also in a financial crisis and you never know how an extra $100 or $500 or $1000 per month could change someone’s financial future. So, that’s where I am at now. While I still “sell” products, that really isn’t my main focus. My focus is helping my team and challengers achieve their goals to better their futures. By helping others, I now have the awesome ability to work very part-time hours and receive a full-time income. It’s insane, the most rewarding “job” ever, and nothing I ever expected when I jumped on the Advo-bandwagon a little over a year ago.

A remodel update!

BIG news here in the ONW {future} household – THE WALL IS DOWN!!!

It was big and ugly and blocked off the kitchen from the living area and totally made the house feel dark <– NOT my idea of Florida.

But it is gone and it just looks like an extreme electrical hazard now ;)

The electrician and floor removal men are comin’ on Monday to continue work and we are AHEAD of schedule which never happens in Florida. (Keep your fingers crossed for us, haha!)

I think my threat of going into labor while knee-deep in renovation may have given our contractors a little push to finish earlier rather than later.

If there is any time to use the pregnancy card, I would say this is it ;)

Also, the ugly kitchen will be redone this summer (we’re just doing what is necessary pre-baby right now) – Think white cabinets, light tan/gray granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances and dark wood flooring (that’s going in next week and will match what you see in the “before” photos). It’ll be pretty and fresh and very Florida.

I can’t wait to give you a tour of the rest, but you’ll have to be patient until our furniture arrives.

A new house!

Whew – The past few days have been a whirlwind! Hopefully that explains why I fell off of the planet this week :)

I woke up sick in the middle of the night on Tuesday – chills, nausea, all around blech. After being awake for a few hours (and keeping poor Kyle up!), I finally gave into Tylenol around 5am and fell asleep pretty quickly after that. I slept ALL day on Wednesday and felt much better by the time evening arrived.

And then yesterday, we officially closed on our home – woohoo!!!

We left our apartment before 7am to complete our final walk-thru, wire our money to the closing law firm, and sign our lives (and money) away for the next 30 years. But it turns out we were go-go-go the entire day and I didn’t end up getting home until 9pm!

After closing, we had to head to the hospital for a couple of hours. I was having pelvic pain and my doctor wanted me monitored just to confirm it wasn’t pre-term labor. It’s not, I’m just having Braxton Hicks and – per the OBGYN nurse, there is a fine line between those lovely BH and pre-term labor. I’m hydrated and the good ol’ cervix is still long and closed (THAT was fun to have checked… said no one ever), so the nurse said she doesn’t want to see me for at least a few more weeks ;)

After sitting in triage, it was time to play homeowner and fill a basket at Lowe’s with lots of goodies like a ladder, air filters, and cleaning supplies. It was fun to go into our new home as official owners rather than just visiting it like we have been the past few months!

Kyle stayed to start cleaning – another perk of pregnancy, I can’t inhale the cleaning products so I get out of the initial deep clean – darn!! – while I left to teach BODYPUMP. (Yup, it is still a-okay for me to teach since nothing is going on in uterus-land besides practice – I love Ashley’s post from yesterday on this topic.)

After ‘PUMP, a couple of friends and I went to an incredible Advo event here in Naples. Free Spark? Heck yes!

I arrived back home around 9pm and Kyle had just finished making fajitas – perfection.

Needless to say, I am TIRED today. I’m going to try to hit up 8am SPINNING, then meet a few contractors at the house for some prep work before demolition starts on Monday. (BTW, I’m bummed that I can’t watch them knock down the wall! Apparently they don’t want the baby inhaling the dust – boo.), and I really want a donut so I’ll be fitting that in somewhere today as well ;)

My first treat was passing my NASM CPT exam – wahoo!! It feels so good to have that pass and to tell y’all about it.

An upcoming treat will be closing on our house THIS THURSDAY! Apparently all parties involved missed one of the applications we needed to submit for our HOA approval, so fingers crossed (please and thank you!!) that we can still close this week. There isn’t any use in pointing fingers at this stage in the game – mistakes happen and I think it’s important to be a problem-solver and not a finger pointer in life! – but we need to get crackin’ on our remodels so hopefully timing will still go as planned.

prAna treated me to a lovely surprise package!! Not only did it remind me that I still need to do a few more posts to get those 30 days up here on the blog, but it was FULL of awesome goodies – a new yoga mat, clothes, and fun yoga accessories. It definitely made my day last Thursday.

So, I didn’t technically treat myself to these yet, but I found the nightstands that I’ll be getting for our master bedroom once we move! I love the mirrored look and it will look great with our dark wood floors and off-white bedding and plush headboard.

Finally, I treated myself to lotsa Spark over the week. Seriously, this wonderful liquid has so many nicknames… Mommy juice, Sparkola, Sparkity Spark, Juice from the Gods… But I like to call it my happy juice :) One sip can turn a crappy day into a happy one and that, I am thankful for!

I did it!

Over the past few weeks, I’ve eluded to this thing called “busy.”

I mean, we’re only in the process of buying a house (in Florida, home-buying is similar to managing a room full of first-graders for 20 hours/week… I wish I were kidding…), managing a contractor for our a remodel, finding a few contractors to schedule roofing and plumbing repairs, and preparing to have a baby… Why not throw something else on top?!

Why not? Because I’m crazy, that’s why ;)

Over the past few weeks, because apparently I like to procrastinate, I’ve been spending 40+ hours a week with my head buried in text books and online materials and flashcards. I’ve memorized every muscle and {almost} every bone in the human body and how they work together. I know nutrition like the back of my hand. And I could tell you how the variety of physical compensations (or poor forms) during exercise can cause both short- and long-term injuries.

Oh, and let’s add to that, how the heart works, how seniors and those with health issues like diabetes and heart disease and obesity should progress their fitness routine, proper stabilization, strength, and power exercises for each part of the body, and how to best supplement for success.

It’s official. I’m a NASM Certified Personal Trainer.

If I didn’t tell you pre-exam, please don’t feel left out. I only told a handful of people because I was certain I was going to fail. Actually, walking out of the exam room on Friday morning, I was sure I was going to see a “no pass” on the print out. (The exam is NO JOKE.) But, by some miracle, I heard a “congratulations” from the desk clerk – who told me as I walking in that he knew nothing about sports medicine, only that the exam was difficult – and I did a happy dance… for everyone to see ;)

What are my plans for the future? I’ll get to that in my “ask me anything” post I have coming up later this week!


It was a wonderful, laid back weekend here in Naples. We were able to get a few things checked off of our home-buying list, each some delicious food, enjoy the Gulf, and fit in a few workouts.

I’m not going to argue with that kinda weekend :)

Let’s start with Friday!

We kicked off the weekend with a celebratory pizza at The Crust. (More on the celebratory part tomorrow!) My girl, Christa, recommended The Crust and it did not disappoint except for the fact that they didn’t have black olives on their menu ;) If you’re ever in Naples and have a mad pizza craving, I recommend The Crust!

Both Saturday and Sunday mornings started out with 3-mile family walks. Mitchell was the happiest pup in Florida!

Saturday morning called for some HydraSpark and BODYPUMP 93 practice. I’m slacking on my memorization this time around but have a few more weeks before I need to know it 100%. The music is SO much better than 92 though so I’m PUMPED… no pun intended ;)

We enjoyed a gorgeous, waterside lunch at M Waterfront Grille to take advantage of the beautiful weather. I had been craving a salad (random, I know…) so their organic kale salad with grilled chicken hit the spot!

We headed down to Clam Pass Beach for Saturday’s sunset. There wasn’t much of a sunset but the sounds of the water and the breeze did not disappoint.

The night ended with some cuddles with Mitchell on the sofa… He looks guilty because he’s technically not supposed to be on our furniture but we tend to break the rules on Saturday nights ;)

After a fairly lazy Sunday morning, I headed out to teach BODYPUMP. I had quite a few new peeps in my class which I love. It’s always fairly busy for a Sunday afternoon class – Everyone LOVES ‘PUMP here in Naples!

Tonight we’re grilling fish and brussels sprouts. And by we, I mean I because Kyle is glued to basketball ;)

Pregnancy Update – 31/32 Weeks

We had our last baby appointment yesterday, so I’m here to give y’all an update on the little guy!

The appointment went well – Baby MJ is still head down and his little feet are up by my ribs. I knew that because I can feel him kick ;) It doesn’t hurt at all, but he makes his presence known! The doctor also said he’s pretty low for 31/32 weeks and most women are uncomfortable at this point… The funny thing is that I haven’t really noticed a difference, ha!

All of my stats – iron, blood pressure, weight, etc. are still looking great as well. I also passed my diabetes test (thank goodness) and don’t have to face another needle until D-Day.

How far along? 31/32 weeks

Due date? May 17, 2015

Baby’s size? He’s clocking in at just under 4 pounds.

Total weight gain/loss: Around 14 pounds, somehow I only gained one pound over the past month and the babe gained 2… He must be feeding off my muscles or something ;)

Maternity clothes? Yes! I am still wearing regular fitness gear but everything else (although – let’s be honest, I rarely change out of my lulu!) is maternity.

Stretch marks? Nope. Well, besides my hips, but I am not really worried about those – They’ve disappeared before after I lost my excess weight a few years ago.

Sleep: Good! I honestly have nothing to complain about. I don’t like side sleeping but I’m still getting really good rest each night.

Best moment this week: My baby appointment yesterday, our “Happiest Baby on the Block” class last night, finishing up some house things before closing next week (!!!), and I had some pretty amazing AdvoCare events happen for my team on Tuesday night :)

Miss Anything? Wine, sushi, good cheese, running, sleeping on my stomach/back, having people NOT ask me about being pregnant when I’m out…

Movement: Still kicking around in there! His kicks are less strong now that his space is limited, but he definitely has more specific times of wake and sleep… He likes to sleep when I’m active and he wakes up as soon as I sit down and eat :)

Food cravings: Nothing super intense… I wanted some Peanut M&M’s yesterday and I always want chips, LOL.

Anything making you queasy or sick: Not at all – I feel great!

Labor Signs: Nope! I have pretty frequent Braxton Hicks, but nothing of concern.

Symptoms: Congestion, although I’ve had that since about 8 weeks in and then Braxton Hicks, but that is it. I guess I am really lucky in this front! Although, I think I’m just “comfortable with being uncomfortable” – I don’t expect things to be 100% perfect or painless in any aspect of life so I adjust when the less-than-ideal happens and make the best of it. That’s probably a bit deep for a symptoms question, but I think this viewpoint has gotten me through pregnancy (and a lot of other life events) with a pretty positive attitude.

Belly Button in or out? Still an innie. It’s starting to get a little itchy which I’m guessing means that it’ll pop out soon, but who knows!

Wedding rings on or off? On – I haven’t had any water retention issues.

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy. Unless I’m stressed about moving or something else!

Looking forward to: Seeing updates made to our new house, MOVING, silver (only a few of you know what this means ;) ), not being pregnant come May…

I enjoyed LOTS of treats this past week…

A trip to Lulu to spend a few of my holiday gift cards – shorts for post-baby (they still fit, I just don’t want to stretch them out!) and the If You’re Lucky Jacket. I also signed up for my fitness instructor discount… saving 15% AND using gift cards?! That is what I call a treat!

And because mama looks good, baby has to look good too, right? ;) I found this ADORABLE nautical outfit for MJ. I also purchased the matching hat and it will be his “going home” outfit. As long as he’s cute (fingers crossed…), we’ll be good to go!

Speaking of nautical themes, Kyle and I found some decor for the nursery at Target. A navy whale and a couple of white anchors. Honestly, that is probably all I’ll hang on the walls at first – I’m somewhat of a minimalist when it comes to decorating and, let’s be real, babies could not care less about their sleeping quarters ;)

A few awesome workouts were also a treat! I did not want to go to spin yesterday morning – hello Monday lazies! – but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t so out the door I went. It was a great workout and I was happy to start my week on a good note. A little cardio always feel nice after teaching BP on Sunday afternoons!

Enjoying the gorgeous Florida spring is always a treat – Nightly walks with the boys and a fun trip to the dog beach this weekend to take advantage of the weather!

And finally, my new VO2 Prime bars. I wasn’t really sure what to expect of these (I’m not a huge raspberry flavor fan…), but after reading rave reviews, I decided to go for it… and boy am I glad I did. They’re more mixed berry than raspberry, if that makes any sense haha, and really do provide a nice level of energy for your workout! Not crazy energy like “OMG I CAN LIFT ALL THE WEIGHTS AND RUN THREE MARATHONS THIS MORNING” but a nice steady release that will allow you to safely push yourself to the next level. Definitely add these babies to your next order.
