Weekending

Wait, Sunday night? How is that possible?!

This weekend flew and the next few days have the potential to be a little crazy so if I disappear, you  know why ;)

But let’s chat the weekend!

It was gorgeous on Friday so after teaching spinning, I took Dean and Mitchell on a long walk. It was exhausting, obviously.

Saturday morning BODYPUMP. It was freeeeezing (for Naples) but teaching warmed me up. I taught Sunday afternoon too :)

The week ahead holds a lot of teaching per the norm, getting ready for our Colorado trip, launching my February bootcamps and a few other things that I’ll fill y’all in on later!

Friday Favs

Thank you all so much for the kind birthday wishes on Tuesday! It’s been a fun and busy week – What better way to recap the week’s events than with a post of my favorites from the past few days?!

1. Subbing A TON this week – I snapped this gem (note the sarcasm, LOL) before teaching a circuit-style bootcamp. I think the class thought I was trying to kill them. #yourewelcome ;)

2. My birthday on Tuesday! I celebrated with a dinner out with my favorite boys. Kyle and I shared calamari to start and then I had a kale and lobster cobb salad with some tasty wine for dinner. Dean enjoyed his teething cracker and was – surprisingly, a very good boy the entire time.

3. On Wednesday, I helped my friend celebrate her birthday. We had a little girls night out with wine and churros at a new-ish bar in Naples. It was nice to relax and spend time with girlfriends.

4. This workout. It was killer… Especially the “100 rep” round <– We did that one twice with 100 walking lunges on each leg. Yowzers.

5. Dean and I are trying out a new-to-us Baby Strong Workout over the next few days. The workouts focus on moving with your baby for an efficient yet effective routine. After trying out a few of them yesterday, I can attest to the fact that you can definitely feel the burn. Whew! Dean is a heavy little dude. Today

Today, I am 31. Woah. To be honest, I would have most likely forgotten the fact it was my birthday if it weren’t for the birthday cards on display. #momlife

Happy birthday to meeeee!

I don’t have anything incredibly profound to share with you from my 31 years here on earth. I do, however, feel the urge to share something “31” with y’all today. 

How about 31 thoughts about life at 31? 

Inspirational, I know ;)

1. Age is just a number. I still feel about 17… 23 on a good day <– my favorite age to date!

2. Wait, 31?! That’s OLD. Geesh.

3. Three decades plus some under the belt means more confidence in “being you” every single day. And that is very important.

4. I’m a mom. Yikes. I AM old. And I have to care for another human. Super yikes.

5. Skincare should be a major focus beginning at age 7. #foreheadwrinklesbegone

6. Wine is good for the soul, especially so for us mature souls ;)

7. Reinventing yourself a few times in your 20’s should be a requirement.

8. While I eat healthy foods most of the time, French fries and nachos and Doritos and Oreos will always be my favorite. Apparently taste buds never mature!

9. Sticking to a budget is now a fun challenge. Don’t I sound fun?!

10. It’s easy to say that I care less about what others think as I get older but saying it would be a lie. Human beings are social animals and that means we love (and require) acceptance from our fellow people… I am confident and I don’t let silly people bring me down but I still like to be liked and to belong :)

11. I still never want a tattoo.

12. One of these birthdays I will celebrate in Napa… I’m thinking 35. Who’s down for a par-tay?

13. Waking up to a clean kitchen (and house) is pretty much the best thing ever. End of story.

14. I’m glad I took care of my teeth (and – ahem – still wear my retainer). Remember this Deany when we fight over teeth brushing. #pearlywhites

15. I have yet to come to enjoy talking on the phone. Nope. Nada. Just not my thing!

16. My biggest fear: Lack of control. This is why I hate flying and also why I hate skiing. No control. Shudder…

17. At a certain point, you must learn to enjoy your own company. I have been at that point for 10 years now and have never felt better!

18. There’s a sense of calming a large body of water brings me that I cannot find anywhere else. It’s almost hypnotizing. 

19. I’m a city girl. Oddly enough I grew up in the middle of Iowa, surrounded by corn fields. I love walking everywhere, always having something to do, feeling the city vibe, and living close to friends.

20. Smiling may be my favorite thing to do in a crowded room. It lightens the mood and makes new friends.

21. One of these days the Bears will be good again. One of these days.

22. Same goes for the Cubbies. Apparently I haven’t learned how to select good teams in my 31 years of life ;)

23. Naps. They should be required by law.

24. Focus of this year: Take one step back and a big breath before responding to anything, good or bad. It prevents overreacting.

25. I’ve gotten much better at spending less money on “things” and more money on “happenings.” We remember times with each other, not the stuff we don’t need.

26. I must have a banana every. single. day. And peanut butter too ;)

27. Closing your eyes while doing sit-ups (or any core exercise) makes them 1,000x easier. Trust me.

28. I’m a natural busy body. Sitting around is not my style.

29. Sleeping without a fan is not an option.

30. Mornings are far greater than evenings. Yes, I am that annoying morning person ;)

31. Am I supposed to have it all together by 31? Please say no… That’s what makes life fun, NOT having it all together. Ever.

Here’s to 31! May it be better than the previous 30 combined.

Weekending

How are y’all doing? I hope everyone in the line of the mega snowstorm is safe and warm and (hopefully) has a snow day from work tomorrow ;) #snowperks

It was a relaxing weekend here in Naples so I don’t have much to report and only a few photos to share. Dean and I are both so happy that Kyle is back home with us as of Saturday evening! He was in Germany since last weekend for work so I was doing the single mom thing and it was definitely not easy. All you single parents out there are incredible.

I do find it odd/interesting that Dean slept a lot better while Kyle was gone… It probably just coincided with a mental leap/growth spurt but he is not fighting his crib (knock on wood) and sleeping pretty consistently as of the last week. Fingers crossed it lasts!

Now, for the weekend!

I taught 3 Spin classes on Friday so I was D.E.A.D. on Friday evening. I did nothing and was happy LOL.

Dean and I hit up the gym early on Saturday for a HIIT class. Quick and fun! Later that afternoon we headed out to do some shopping. Lulu and a few other fun spots…

Friday Favs

Well, hey there! Happy Friday!

I’ve been really busy this week, hence the MIA-ness happening here. Y’all understand, right? This January has been busy for EVERYONE – At least everyone I know ;)

Let’s chat some weekly favorites (since it has been foreverrrrr) so I can share what we’ve been up to this week!

1. Teaching lots and lots and LOTS of BODYPUMP and spin/cycle classes. Like A LOT, you guys. So much I didn’t think I was going to make it through my Tuesday class (but I did, obvs…) and the members all started joking that all of the other BP instructors must have quit. PHEW! And then spin/cycle happened more than a few times at a handful of gyms here in Naples… I definitely got both my cardio and my weight lifting in for the week by Monday night. I’m not complaining but I am saying that I need a massage… I may be booking one for Sunday.

2. I finally found Deany a highchair. I’ve been procrastinating on this for so long… We’ve been using his Bumbo seat which works fine but I know he would like a highchair MUCH better. In Naples, it is never a good idea to purchase a pricey baby item at full price. There are SO many grandparents here that buy big items for one or two uses and then take them to the consignment shops. Dean and I hit up one yesterday and found this chair for a steal ($40!!!) so we left with it and some clothes (don’t tell Kyle, hehe) for around $50. I am calling that a win! There is a tray that isn’t in the photo below and plenty of space for Dean to make a mess!

3. This. Has anyone else ever experienced the WORST surprise ever when biting into a cookie and finding raisins rather than chocolate chips?! UGH. While I do like raisins (just not in cookies…), wine would be a much better use for those grapes ;)

4. A little wannabe walker! Deany is getting ready to be on the move sooner rather than later. He’s moving forward with his walker and soon enough, he’ll be running around. It’s crazy how much they change in a few short months!

5. Day 11 was yesterday. If you are ALL-IN with the rest of us, you know what I mean ;) Hellooooo energy! It was kind of a madhouse and go-go-go yesterday for us so I was thankful for the boost. And I’m SUPER excited for the free shipping coming our way… stocking up on Spark and Rehydrate and a bunch of other goodies that my pantry NEEDS.

6. Oh! And I wanted this to be a favorite today but alas, it isn’t. I attempted to check out Lucky’s Market – a new, super affordable, grocery store in Naples (apparently it is similar to a Trader Joe’s but cheaper and they have a BAR and a sandwich shop and a wine shop and everything I need in my life, LOL) but the parking lot was insane. INSANE. I took one look, said nope and decided to head back once the hoopla has died down. They offer $2 pints… I think Kyle will be making this his new grocery shopping spot ;)

My current brain waves…

… AKA – A random collection of my thoughts as I type.

1. Why does my kid only take marathon naps when we need to be somewhere??

2. I’m fairly certain my face has become 1,000x more wrinkly since becoming a mother. Is that possible? I’m trying out a new-to-me skincare line (it just arrived in the mail!), I’ll keep you updated.

3. I feel so much more put together when my toenails are painted. In case you’re curious, I just painted them and they’re hot pink.

4. Once your kid starts crawling, your daytime productivity falls below zero. Yes, my productivity during daylight hours may actually be negative at this point.

5. I can now say that I have survived a tsunami.

6. I REALLY want Chipotle but can’t justify the risk. Teaching BODYPUMP and caring for an infant while ill with E.Coli doesn’t sound like much fun…

7. I’ve been teaching a ridiculous amount of classes at my gyms lately. On Thursday I plan on doing NOTHING… although every Thursday I say that and end up at my friend’s HIIT class that afternoon ;)

8. We are going to Breckenridge in a few short weeks and I am really excited for it! Kyle will be boarding and I will be hitting up the spas and doing some shopping while sipping on vino. I. CANNOT. wait!

9. I wish I enjoyed decorating a house. Well, scratch that, I do ENJOY it. I just don’t know how to put things together. Send helppppp. And things for the walls.

We had a bit of a crazy Saturday night/Sunday morning… No photos because it was the middle of the night but there were TORNADOES and a meteotsunami thanks to the 80MPH winds (7 feet ABOVE high tide… Google meteotsunami – Unless you want me to science geek out on you ;) ) in Naples. What the what?? My phone alert startled me at 5am so all of us and Mitchell sat in the closet for a good hour until the storm passed (it did not sound very pleasant outside) – Thankfully, our neighborhood didn’t sustain much damage. There were branches and debris scattered around and one tree down on our street but closer to the beach, LOTS of trees and power lines had been downed. Scary! They decided to cancel the Naples Half Marathon scheduled for this morning – Super disappointing for all of the runners who worked so hard during training, but it was necessary for safety reasons.

So, 5am wakeup call… 8am spin class… 1pm BODYPUMP… And I was SPENT!

I ordered a delicious salad (forgot to ask for no croutons/cheese <– per the ALL IN challenge!) but those were easy enough to avoid. The shrimp was AH-MAZ-ING.

Dean Axel – Eight Month Update

Dean has changed so much over the past month! He’s bigger, he has half a tooth (haha!), he’s moving at lightening speed, and he’s pulling himself up and starting to creep along furniture. It’s fun to watch him grow by the day!

I am unsure of his physical stats so I’ll update those after his 9-month appointment in February.

Likes:

  • Yelling BABABABABABA and then laughing hysterically. He must have some pretty good jokes ;)
  • Crawling everywhere.
  • Petting Mitchell… It’s more like pulling his hair but he is definitely interested in the pup!
  • Playing with everything dangerous – Electrical outlets (yes, they’re baby proofed), charging cords, doors, etc.)
  • Eating shoes, particularly flip flops
  • Reading books
  • Bathtime
  • Looking in the mirror
  • Playing fetch <– I promise I’m not turning my kid into a dog, LOL, but he really likes to crawl after toys if I toss them across the room. I count it as his daily exercise ;)
  • Biting/chewing everything – Must feel good on those teethies!
  • Waving his hands

Dislikes:

  • Sleeping – Okay, actually he is a pretty good sleeper as long as one of us is close by. We’re working on this…
  • Being held still when he wants to be crawling.
  • Mom’s home cookin’ <– he only likes store bought baby food!

Overall he’s a pretty happy guy so we don’t have too many “dislikes” at this stage.

I think I say this every month, but SO much changed over the past few weeks. Dean is now crawling like crazy and has mastered sitting up. He was able to crawl before he could sit which seems a little bizarre to me but now that he can do both, he is very happy with himself!

Just after the new year, his first tooth popped through! Front bottom left… It is coming in slowly but it’s definitely sharp. He seems to be more interested in trying food now that he has a tooth (I think that is fairly common). He prefers the store bought pouches to my homemade baby food and I think it may be a texture thing. The store bought ones are much smoother than I can get them at home. I’m a-okay with his preference – Not that making baby food is difficult, it is also just pretty easy to grab off a shelf ;)

We’re still working on the whole crib sleeping thing. He is sleeping his first few hours in the crib now and is getting a little better at settling himself to sleep. Obviously some nights are awful and some we are impressed with how easily he goes down – He’ll get the hang of it one of these days! He does really well with napping in his crib and still takes 3 naps most days.

He has started becoming more interested in Mitchell by the day and Mitchell now knows to just get up and walk away if he doesn’t want to be bothered. I’m sure they will be getting into trouble together before long!
Dean LOVES when Kyle gets home from work at night… as do I. I let the boys play and get some alone time! Dean has started “reaching” toward who he wants to hold him as well. It’s pretty cute and he almost always wants me to hold him ;)

He is still really easy to run errands with so he makes manyyyy trips to Target each week. I do try to avoid Publix
with him but only because every. single. grandparents. in the store feels the need to talk to me about Dean AND their grandchildren. It’s cute but I don’t have 3 hours to grocery shop each afternoon, haha! And I have now seen more photos of grandkids than I know what to do with.

Overall, everything is going great! Of course I would like more sleep (what parent wouldn’t?!) but there are much worse things we could be dealing with.

Oh! And we picked a theme for his first birthday party. I was debating whether or not to even have one for him but Kyle insisted so I think we’re going to have a few friends over, have a little cake, and enjoy some adult beverages <– I mean, he WILL be a whole 12 months… I kid, I kid! Milk for the babes, mimosas for the mommies ;)

The healthiest smoothie!

I meant to get this post up a few days ago but my servers were experiencing an issue that wouldn’t allow me to upload photos… and then I accidentally deleted the photos I wanted to share. Go figure! Haha – Thankfully, all is fixed now :)

It’s January and that means we are all focusing on our health… at least for the next few weeks ;)

I kid, I kid… I know most of my readers try to focus on living healthy a majority of the time, BUT since it is the new year – and we have a lot of people jumping on the healthy bandwagon right now, I thought I’d share a super healthy smoothie recipe.

But first, raise of hands, who set a few new years resolutions or goals? I did! And I hope that even if you didn’t set specific goals, you have an idea in mind of how you would like to take on the new year.

Alright, now back to this smoothie recipe…

I’m not a huge smoothie for breakfast kinda gal. I have to chew my food in order to feel satisfied until lunch, but I love a good smoothie for a snack. They’re a great way to boost your calcium and green veggie intake. Plus they taste like a treat!

While a green smoothie may be tasty and good for ya, it most definitely isn’t pretty to the eyes. I have yet to see a green smoothie photograph that looked appealing, so you’re just going to have to go with me on this one, mmkay?

A few of my all-time FAVORITE smoothie ingredients are in today’s smoothie recipe.

  • Nut butter (obvs…)
  • Spinach
  • Blue Diamond Almond Milk (one of my fave ways to get in additional calcium)
  • Banana

Those are my “favorite four” as I like to call them… A smoothie isn’t complete unless they’re in the mix!

So how ’bout the rest of the recipe? It’s full of healthy ingredients and protein and fiber and all of the stuff you want in a smoothie AND it tastes pretty amazing if you ask me ;)

The Healthiest Smoothie

Makes 1 smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 TBSP nut butter
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 cup Blue Diamond Almond Milk
  • 1 banana
  • 1/8 cup ground flax seed
  • 1 cup plain, fat-free Greek yogurt
  • Splash of vanilla

Directions:

In a large blender, combine all ingredients and mix until smooth. Pour into a large glass and enjoy!

Raise your {smoothie} glass to the new year – Let’s make it great!

Word of 2016

I have changed it a dozen times.

I have read others’ words for the year ahead.

I have thought about what I want to focus on this year and why I want it to be my focus.

I have FINALLY decided on my word for 2016.

PURPOSE.

 
Questions I will ask myself each day over the next 12 months include:

Does this activity help me achieve my purpose?

Do I need this item to work toward my purpose?

What purpose does this serve in my life?

I want to be more intentional with my actions, purchases, and time. If circumstances, items, events and so on will help me reach my goals, bring it on. If not, I’m going to take a step back before committing.

Even while typing, this seems incredibly simple. I assure you it will be far from easy!

By the way, if you look at a word long enough, you begin to question its spelling and looks ;)
