What is collagen?

Have you heard of collagen?

If you’re the least bit interested in beauty and/or health, I’m sure you’ve seen it referenced a time or two. It is the newest buzzword in the health and beauty industries… and for good reason!

So, what IS collagen?

Per Medical News Today, “Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, found in the bones, muscles, skin, and tendons.”

Okay, so collagen is a protein… what’s the big deal?

Well it IS a big deal if you care about the health of your connective tissues… I’m talking joint health, healthy skin, nails and hair, and reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Did I catch your attention yet?

Collagen is important when it comes to your body growing new connective tissue – that means keeping joints, bones and tendons healthy as well as quickly replenishing skin, hair and nail cells (the quicker our body can replenish cells, the younger our skin/hair/nails appear). When we are young, collagen is produced by our bodies in abundance, but as we age and expose our body to UV radiation and other environmental factors, our bodies produce less and less collagen. This is why we associate popping joints, brittle nails/hair, and wrinkles with aging… our body produces less collagen to prevent these age-related issues.

Besides age, what else can reduce collagen production?

  • High sugar consumption (UGH, I KNOWWW… even more reason to keep that sweet tooth in check!)
  • Smoking
  • UV Rays
  • Genetics

So, what can we do to prevent collagen loss?

The biggest factor in maintaining healthy collagen production is – you guessed it, a healthy diet. Consuming the correct amounts of Vitamins A and C, copper (found in nuts, red meats and shellfish), as well as Proline (found in egg whites, meat, and cheese) can aid in the production of collagen.

Along with a healthy diet, I’ve chosen to supplement my collagen over the past few months. I’ve tried a few brands and while, I do think they work (although it is still a bit early to tell…), they either don’t mix well or leave an awful flavor when I mix them into my smoothies or water.

Because I’m always looking for new health and beauty supplements to try, I was SO excited when AdvoCare announced the launch of its Glow system a few weeks ago! There are three products in the system, one of which is a collagen supplment. YAY!!!

Glow is a three-step system designed to promote the health of our skin, hair and nails. It is comprised of three products – Collagen, Skin, and Hair & Nails, and it has received only RAVE reviews from the ladies (and gentlemen!) that were given the opportunity to test it before it was released to the public.

Step 1 is Glow Collagen. This supplement supports skin firmness and elasticity, promotes healthy skin cell function, and helps support natural collagen and elastin fiber production. It is a drink mix that is a cherry berry flavor and my oh my is it ever tasty!! It is much better than other collagen products I’ve tasted!

Step 2 is Glow Skin. This supplement provides antioxidants to support skin health, helps promote healthy aging of the skin, and supports healthy skin quality and structure. It is a single pill you consume daily.

Step 3 is Glow Hair & Nails. This supplement promotes healthy hair growth, supports lustrous hair (yes, please!!), and contains nutrients that support hair and nail strength. It is also a single pill you consume daily.

As I am now entering my mid-30’s (say whattt??), taking care of my body is one of my main priorities. I eat mostly healthy, I exercise, I *try* to get enough sleep (LOL, I’m a mom… yeah, right!), and I supplement to fill in any nutritional gaps my diet may not provide.

For me, staying healthy also means looking healthy. Is that shallow? Maybe, but if products can not only make me look better but also keep my skin, hair, nails, and other connective tissues healthier, count me in!

I am currently participating in a Glow Challenge where everyone is taking the new AdvoCare Glow System for 30 days and sharing their real results. The online group is private and very supportive, open, and a big ol’ self-love fest. We have been sharing photos of our before images this week along with photos that make us feel like we are GLOWing. I am loving this new “challenge” and all of the love and support we are showing each other.

Current Favorites

These are a few of my favorite things…

I’ve been loving on a few things lately and – because I always like to know about fun things others enjoy, I want to share my current faves with you!

1. Walmart Grocery Online Ordering – YOU GUYS. This is a game changer! I’ll be honest, I am not a huge fan of Walmart (Target all the way…), but I have been impressed with this new service since James was born. I won’t lie, the thought of grocery shopping with a toddler and an infant is somewhat terrifying which drove me to try this service back in June. I’m happy to report that not only does it make grocery shopping a breeze, ordering AND picking up is incredibly simple, Walmart has an impressive assortment of organic/natural products, and I find that I save money by not randomly browsing aisles in the store. And yes, you can order items other than groceries… the only exclusion being electronics. So load that cart up with toiletries, WINE (haha), whatever you need!

Here’s the gist of it… you reserve an hour time slot for pick-up, place your order online (they even have an awesome phone app so you can order on your phone!), arrive at the pick-up location and – voila! – your groceries are loaded into your car. Seriously… that’s it! I definitely recommend checking it out! If it is your first time using the service, here is a link that you can use to save yourself $10.

2. Vilia Soaps – My internet friend (One of my favorite kind of friends… the ones you meet online!), Staci, recently contacted me about her new soap company, Vilia Soap Company. She and her husband recently moved back to the United States after living abroad in Greece (#goals) and decided to begin selling handmade soaps made with Greek olive oil. She sent me a few to try and I am pleased to report that these may be my new favorite soaps!

I was a bit hesitant at first because I am not a fan of grandma-esque soaps… you know the kind that smell like decorative soaps? Villa Soaps are NOT like that at all! 3. Baby Bjorn – Dean LOVED our Baby Bjorn carrier when he was a baby and James has been the same so far. I actually purchased a K’Tan as well after receiving good reviews from friends, but that one is tricky to put on and James does not like it nearly as much. It is what I use to get him to nap if he won’t give in and I carry him in it while running errands. If you’re a new mama or expecting, this carrier is a must!

4. Commit to FIT – YOU GUYS!! I am super excited about this!! (Can you tell by all of my exclamation points?! LOL.) A few weeks ago, AdvoCare launch a brand new line of products called FIT… yep, you guessed it – They are for your fitness game! There are Pre, Intra and Post products as well as a convenient, ready-to-drink protein shake.

The products take the guessing game out of your fitness supplements (HALLELUJAH!) as you take the Pre 30 minutes before a workout, the Intra during a workout, and the Post within 45 minutes following a workout. Time for a change!

Tomorrow, July 8th, marks ONE month since James arrived in our world. Where does the time go?!

I would say that I had a fairly easy pregnancy… actually, I take that back. No pregnancy is EASY, but I had zero health complications and for that I am grateful. I was pretty nauseous until midway through my pregnancy however. For me, nausea = ONLY consuming carb- and fat-filled foods like pizza, quesadillas, cheese, pizza, and more pizza. Did I mention pizza? Ha! I was on the carb-loading pregnancy train, and to be honest, I haven’t yet jumped off yet.

My eating is a bit better these days (by a bit I mean I don’t eat pizza once per day…) and I have more self-control now that my body isn’t being ravaged by crazy pregnancy hormones <– read: I don’t give into every. single. craving. my body throws my way these days. Thank goodness because with James, my cravings were NOT healthy, haha! But my eating still needs a major shift back to the healthy side.

I am *slowly* dropping some of my baby weight, or so I assume based on photos of myself. I won’t weigh myself again until my 6 week appointment in a few weeks. I’m thankful that breastfeeding helps me get back to my non-pregnancy normal. BUT I must say that I am more than ready to kick this postpartum booty into gear and get rid of the rest of my baby weight!

In case you’re wondering, nope, I definitely do NOT like these images of myself but these “before” photos are going to make my “after” photos even more rewarding!

Some may say that 2 months postpartum is far too early to focus on weight loss. I say to each their own! I feel good, James is already a much better sleeper than Dean ever was (knock on wood…), and I’m getting back into my fitness routine next week (Eek! Join me for BODYPUMP, Naples friends!). Eating well and losing the extra weight will only give me more energy to be a better mom and teach better classes!

On August 1st (yes, I know it is a Tuesday – I like starting with the number 1, LOL), I will be kicking off my postpartum 24 Day Challenge! I am ridiculously excited for it if you couldn’t tell ;-)

I know I’ve raved about AdvoCare often on this little blog of mine, but I absolutely believe in this program. It works if you work. Nope, it’s not a quick fix or a crash diet. You don’t starve your body. It is a real food program that teaches us how to incorporate healthy habits into a lifestyle. It is sustainable and you will see results if you follow the plan.

January 2, 2017 – What are YOUR goals?

2017 is right around the corner and I have one question for you. Okay, actually TWO questions for you ;)

Weekending – Naples fun!

Good morning! How was your weekend? It sure went by quickly here in Naples.

How about a little photo recap?

Starting with Thursday… A little pre-weekend fun. We had quite a few friends visiting Naples this weekend for an AdvoCare incentive trip. Everyone came over on Thursday night – super fun to have everyone in one room!

Friday night happy hour for group fitness managers = Pumping up fitness balls, LOL. Dean LOVED it!

Kyle has been begging for a new TV for months (years?) – I told him if he mounted it to the wall, he could get a new one. Still no new TV but I think it will be in our  near future.

BODYPUMP on Friday with my Advo-friends! So much fun :)

Saturday AM trip to the best farmer’s market in Naples – I had my first acai bowl. YUMM!!

Then some time at the Naples Pier beach since we were so close.

I ordered some new-to-me protein bars – So far, so good! I tried the chocolate brownie flavor yesterday and had the birthday cake flavor for breakfast this morning. YUM!

Dean and I checked out a new restaurant in Naples that friends have been RAVING about… McAlister’s Deli. Yup, it’s good!

And that’s a weekend wrap – We also hit up the dog park, went on lotsa walks, made a few Target trips, and mixed up some peanut butter pie :)

We also received a preview of a few of Dean’s one year photos. He was NOT cooperating that day but I can’t wait to see the rest!

Friday Faves!

Is it Friday? I have been confused on the day of the week this entire week! I guess that what happens following a holiday weekend ;)

Whatcha up to this weekend? We don’t have any major plans – I am chaperoning (<– Does this mean I’m old?! LOL) a post-graduation event for local high school seniors. It’s basically an after prom and should be a ton of fun… even though it is in the middle of the night, haha. AND I am also hosting a BODYPUMP training this weekend – I’m excited to meet some of the Les Mills trainers! Other than that, I don’t have much on the agenda – Rest and relaxation <– MAJOR LOLs with a toddler ;)

How about we talk about some of my personal favorites from the week?

1. Scheduling Dean’s 1 year photos! I know, I know… I’m almost a month late. BUT they are set for next week and I can’t wait to see them. Dean and I went shopping yesterday in preparation – Two for him, one for me.


2. I have decided to pursue a career in film… Kidding! ;) But you should most definitely check out this video where I chat about training at the Greater Naples YMCA! Please don’t judge my slouching or awkward faces…

3. Kicking off my Two Week Tone Up challenge! It’s Day 4 and I’m already feeling SO much better. It’s amazing what good-for-you food, vitamins, no wine (wahhh…), and lotsa Spark can do for the body.


4. My little monkey LOVING peanut butter toast! It’s a dream come true, haha. I was concerned for the longest time that he’d be allergic to peanuts (so far, so good) and now every. single. time. I make myself PB toast for breakfast, he HAS to have it. It’s a mess to clean up but I’m glad he loves one of my favorite foods!


5. Finally getting organized enough to set a few monthly goals. FINALLY. I’ll be honest, I’m not great at this goal-settin’ thing… I forget about them and then get frustrated. BUT, my new planner has a section for monthly goals so I’m trying it out again. It’s June 3rd and so far, I’m successfully completing all of them ;) #startsmall

Why I love MLMs

I was thinking over the weekend. I was thinking about the types of products and businesses I love and support when I realized that I LOVE and SUPPORT many companies that are considered to be “MLMs” – Multi-level marketing, direct sales business model, network marketing… Whatever your preferred terminology may be.

My last post professed my love for Rodan + Fields. I obviously am obsessed with all things AdvoCare (#sparkhead4life). I recently held an Usborne Books party. I use Younique cosmetics. My house smells of delicious Scentsy scents. I diffuse my Young Living oils weekly. I show off my Stella & Dot jewelry when Kyle and I go on a date night.

And the list goes on.

I wasn’t lying when I said I LOVE MLMs ;)

Since direct sales tends to get a bad rap, I thought I would share the reasons why I choose to support my favorite companies that just so happen to be part of the direct sales business model.

  1. The products ROCK. I do my research before I buy anything (I like to know what I’m putting in/on my body, where my products are made, if the organization supports any charities, etc.) and direct sales companies – at least most of them – offer high quality products!
  2. I like – and honestly prefer to – support my friends when I am spending money. If I know I am going to receive quality products AND I can financially support a friend in the process, why wouldn’t I want to purchase from an MLM?
  3. They offer great opportunities to make a “Plan B” income. Sure, some people “make it big” (or whatever you want to say) with direct sales but from my observations, most people involved just want to make a few extra bucks per month to pay off student loans (ahem, me!), save for their child’s education, build up a vacation or emergency fund, or have some extra spending money. It’s not an easy business model, but if you put in the work, the extra $100, $500, $1,500 per month can really help you move toward a debt-free life… or whatever your financial goal may be.
  4. They allow their members to make some fabulous friends along the way. Sure, you could say this about any organization or club or workplace, but – again from my own observations, the friends that are made in this business model are lifelong! I’ve met more individuals that hold similar beliefs, goals, and aspirations to mine since I’ve been involved with AdvoCare than I have in any other organization I have been a part of in my life.
  5. They’re fun and they help people. Life isn’t fun if you take yourself too seriously, right? For me, direct sales isn’t about bringing in a big fat check or earning a vacation or earning a promotion… Not at all – If it were, I think I would be setting myself up for disappointment, LOL. For me, direct sales (specifically AdvoCare because that is where I have my experience) is about helping others. I like helping people on my team. I like helping people looking to improve their personal health – whether it is for weight loss, fitness performance, or energy. I like receiving text messages about how AdvoCare allowed a friend to push herself harder in last weekend’s marathon or how a new mom now has the energy to care for her newborn AND her active toddler or how the income a friend earned last month allowed her to finally pay off her car loan. I get the happy feels. I just like helping people!

While all of the above are reasons I absolutely believe in the direct sales business model, I’ll be the first to admit that some direct sales “marketing techniques” are more than annoying. I’m not going to go into specific details, but honestly, I think the techniques that annoy us all say more about individual distributor than the company as a whole. Maybe it is just me, but the last thing I would ever want to do is pester and annoy my friends until they no longer want to be my friends ;)

I am personally quite thankful for the opportunity I’ve found within direct sales and will PROUDLY support all of the companies (and in turn, my friends!) I listed above.

A day in the life… {almost} 9 months

Thinking back, I wish I would have done “day in the life”  posts every month with Dean. Better late than never, right?

Today I’ll be sharing a little glimpse about what life is like with an almost 9-month old!

6:30am – Kyle’s alarm goes off. Dean stirs and I wish for an hour of more sleep. #yeahright

7/7:15am – Dean is up for the day. Hi Mom, let’s play!

I change his diaper, put him in his day clothes and then set him in his crib to play for 5 minutes. During those 5 minutes I start my new facial care routine (loving it, BTW!), brush my teeth, and mix up then chug a mega Spark. I feel like a new woman afterwards with a clean face and tasty energy ;)


7:30am – Nurse Dean.

7:45am – Let Dean crawl around like a crazy monster… he’s most likely chasing balls and/or Mitchell in the mornings… while I prepare breakfast for us. This particular morning I had avocado toast and a banana and Dean enjoyed pureed prunes.

8:15am – Clean up Dean and the table/high chair/kitchen and let Dean chase Mitchell around a little longer.


8:45/9am – Naptime! WOOHOOOOO! Dean and Mitchell snooze for about 45 minutes while I catch up on emails, my personal training work, Advo stuff, laundry… Whatever I want/need to get done without a baby crawling after me.

9:40am – On this particular day, we have story time so I load Dean up in the car and we head to the library.

10-10:30am – Mother Goose story/song time! Dean LOVES this weekly activity and gets the biggest smile on his face as we start singing.

11am – After hanging out with some moms (so our babies can play, of course LOL) after story time, Dean and I head to Target to pick up a few things before making our way to the YMCA.

11:30am – Nurse Dean and then drop him off at the YMCA child watch and I head to teach BODYPUMP. His favorite teacher, Alandria, is there and they’re both excited to spend some QT together!

12noon-1pm – Teach BODYPUMP… Tell people to squat lower, lift heavier, do 10 more push-ups… you know, fitness stuff ;)


1pm – Mix up my post workout (it’s the best stuff for recovery/muscle development after a good sweat session!), wash my hands, and then run to grab Dean since child watch closes at 1pm!

1-2:15pm – Dean falls asleep in the car so while he naps in his car seat, I drive home, shower, check emails, take Mitchell outside and figure out what’s for lunch.

2:30pm – Milk time for Dean/Spark time for Mama… then it’s lunch time for us. I have leftover tacos and Dean has more prunes. He has been having some issues adjusting to real food so he needs prunes… If ya know what I mean.


3pm – Clean up Dean (he hatesssss this) and pull out a few books for us to read. He loves book with animals and animal noises.

4pm – Wonder when Kyle is going to get home ;) Just being honest!

4:15pm – Naptime for Dean… I either try to nap with him (depends on how the previous night went) or catch up with my training and/or blog projects.

5:15pm – Milky time.

5:30pm – DAD IS HOMEEEEEEE. Hallelujah. Give him 1.79 seconds to change and then send Dean his way. Dean is always excited to see his dad – He smiles, laughs, kicks his legs, and know the “fun one” is home.


6pm – Start dinner. Sometimes this is Kyle, sometimes it is me… Depends on the meal! This night it was fajita night and I was in charge.

6:30pm – Sit down to a family dinner <– We do this almost every night to teach the importance of eating together (and eating the SAME foods), listening/talking to each other as a family. No TV, no cell phones… Just us with Mitchell begging at our feet ;)

7pm – Kyle starts cleaning the kitchen while I start the bedtime routine. Book time then milk time then I hand Dean off to Kyle for his bath.

7:30pm – Dean goes into his crib. Sometimes he falls asleep right away, sometimes it takes a couple of rounds of “encouragement” for him to crash. He was REALLY good when Kyle was gone in Europe… Must be something about having his playmate home ;)


8-10pm – RELAX. Kind of… Sometimes I blog. Sometimes I catch up on training work. Sometimes I have a few phone calls… It just depends on the day. I need to go to bed at 8pm but such is life!

10pm – SLEEP TIME. I can usually get a few hours in before Dean wakes up hungry.

So, there it is… my life with a 9-month old Deanster. I’m thankful he is pretty good about entertaining himself even if he prefers to entertain himself with dangerous items like electrical outlets, charging cords, sharp corners… you know, the fun things.

What time do you wake up/go to bed at night?

2016 – A new year!

I always get a little sentimental thinking of this day two years ago… Okay, today plus two days if we’re counting down to the last second ;)

Kyle and I were visiting Ames for an early Christmas celebration with my family and I remember sitting on my mom’s sofa cursing her slow internet connection as I was attempting to respond to an email from my friend, Lauren. She invited me to participate in a New Years’ challenge and I was so excited, I couldn’t wait to respond with “HECK YES, count me in!”

The thing is, I had been thinking about trying out Advocare for almost a year but I always found an excuse… time, money, prior commitments, skepticism… You name it, I listed it off as a “reason” to why I couldn’t/shouldn’t/wouldn’t try Advocare.

Thankfully, something changed when I read her email that afternoon. Maybe I just needed a little push in the right direction, a friend to help me along the way, someone to lead me toward something better…  It just so happened that I decided to finally make a change for the better in December 2013. 

A LOT has changed for us in the past two years – a big move south, The Deanster, leaving corporate America, and pursuing my passion in health and fitness.

Never once did it cross my mind that by saying yes to Advocare that cold December day I would be setting myself up for an incredible and (almost) unbelievable journey. Advocare has not only taught us how to live a balanced, healthy lifestyle but through A LOT of hard work it has provided residual income, an incredible group of friends, and an avenue for me to begin my personal training business. I’m not certain I will ever be able to give a big enough “thank you” to everyone who has helped me on this little journey of mine!

Oftentimes I kick myself for not starting sooner. Why did I wait an entire year to jump on board? I could have been one whole year further into my journey… But then I realize we start when we are ready. Maybe that is you, maybe you are ready to take the leap and start a healthier way of living in 2016.
