Little known facts

Well hello there Thursday, so nice of you to make an appearance!

This morning I’m headed off to MOPS then it’ll be a busy afternoon getting ready for visitors this weekend and family photos tonight. Whew! I’m slightly tired just thinking about today ;) Add to that a fun ladies’ wine and game night that I went to last night with a few friends in my neighborhood… Let’s just say, bring on the weekend!

I thought it would be fun to share some little known facts about myself in today’s post… Or maybe well known facts if you’ve been following me for a while.

Let’s jump right in!

1. I LOVE to bake. Like love love LOVE to bake. It relaxes me and it is fun to see others enjoy your creations. My nickname may have been Becky Crocker in grad school… What can I say? I liked to share my treats with my team! You can find some of my tasty recipes here.

2. Speaking of school, I received both my undergraduate degree and MBA from Iowa State University. Go Cyclones! My undergraduate is in environmental science and I earned a minor in sustainable agriculture while working toward my MBA. #treehugger4life

3. I met my husband (Kyle) in grad school – We are the two in the middle in the photo below. We were in the same MBA program and after our first date (it was a run!), I thought the next 2 years were going to be super awkward since we would have to see each other on a daily basis. Welp, turns out it worked out since we are married now ;)

4. I am a new-ish mom to Dean (aka – Deany Beany) – He’s almost 6 months old! It feels like just yesterday we were announcing his pending arrival.

5. Before The Deanster made me a human mama, my first child is the one and only Mitchell. Mitchell Man is a black lab-mastiff cross and I have had him ever since he was 4 weeks old! He will be 10 in March although he still acts like he is 2 (when do labs calm down?!) – I adopted him when I was 21 and he’s been in my life longer than Mr. Kyle.

6. Before living in Naples, Florida, Kyle and I lived in downtown Chicago for almost exactly one year. And before Chicago, we lived in Minneapolis for four years. I grew up in Iowa so Florida is the first place I have lived outside of the Midwest.

7. While we are on the topic of the Midwest, I hateeeee winter. I would much rather be hot than cold so when Kyle was offered a new position in Naples, I was ready to pack up and leave that night ;) I will admit that I miss the fall weather, but it is fall-like from Thanksgiving through April here so I can’t complain too much. I also miss living downtown in a large city… although we wouldn’t be downtown if we had stayed in Chicago thanks to The Deanster.

8. In my previous life (my life before Florida), I worked in the retail industry in Corporate America. I provided analytics and financial data to help support the buying teams’ decisions. While it was fun to help select product for store shelves, it isn’t as easy as it is made to seem in a store! There is so much that goes into each product – It somewhat ruined my love of shopping… But only kind of, hehe! And yes, I’m a math nerd ;)

9. Now, I am in the fitness industry! I am a NASM CPT and teach BODYPUMP and Spinning at gyms in Naples. It’s a good “job” to have as a mom. I can get out of the house daily to teach but still spend time with my little dude. Plus, people that workout are HAPPY and it is fun to work with happy, motivated, healthy, and excited individuals!

10. I really like wine and olives – hence Olives ‘n Wine, but I am in no way a wine connoisseur. I can tell you what I like and don’t like, but don’t ask me to tell you if the wine is acidic or floral or any of that jazz. I’ll just tell you if it’s good or not and if I would like a refill. Please and thank you!

11. Also, don’t ask me to pick out a bottle of red. It causes me stress! Whites I can do but I have an irrational fear of selected a horrible tasting bottle of red.

12.  Here on the blog, I like to write like I speak. I like to feel as if I’m having a conversation with y’all and that if you met me in real life, you would recognize my style :)

13. I’m incredibly Type A although becoming a mom has somehow caused me to chill out a bit. I still have my Type A tendencies but go with the flow more often than not now (and without freaking out about it!).

14. One of my life goals (actually “our” life goals) is to own a condo in downtown Chicago on Lake Michigan as well as a condo or a house here in Naples. We are ready to be snowbirds! We already have the house in Naples (Here is a tour!), now to save up for a condo in Chicago.

15. I’m scared of water. There, I said it. I will never ever swim alone (someone has to be in the water with me) and jumping into the ocean terrifies me. Yup, I live on a beach too! I know how to swim but the thought of a shark attack or not being able to see my feet gives me the heebie jeebies. Add that to my list of irrational fears along with flying.

16. Generally, I’m a very positive person. I like to see the good in everything and keep a “glass half full” mentality. I figure it isn’t worth getting upset over things you can’t control in life! And the one thing we do have the power to change is our attitude.

17. I’m OB-sessed with Chipotle. I may be there #1 fan. I’m fairly certain Dean’s cells are at least 50% Chipotle considering how much I ate it while pregnant… My other favorite foods include nachos (Grumpy’s in Minneapolis has the BEST nachos, in case you were curious.), black olive pizza, apples, bananas, anything peanut butter and chocolate (especially Reese’s), and avocados. This list makes me look like a super unhealthy eater! I actually eat fairly well most of the time… I just have certain treats I have to indulge in from time to time, like nachos ;)

18. I’m 100% a morning person. I would much rather wake up at 5am than stay up past 9pm. #oldlady

So there you have it! A little bit of random facts about me. I hope y’all learned something new through my thinking out loud post.

Cheers to Friday Eve! But really, what type of wine are you sippin’ on right now? ;)

Confessions of a “bad” mom

Before I jump in, let me start with this… No, I don’t actually think I’m a bad mom! This post is meant to be humorous in my dry humor sort of way ;) Laugh along with me, enjoy my thoughts, and share your bad mom confessions in the comments.

good mom

1. I tend to watch multiple “Whine About It” episodes while feeding Dean… and laugh ridiculously loud the entire time. Haven’t heard of it? It’s a HILARIOUS tumbler video series where a BuzzFeed employee drinks a ton of wine and discusses topics we all love to hate. You gotta check it out.

2. If Dean only pees a little bit, I’ll wait to change his diaper until it’s heavier. Yeah, yeah… I knowwwww. He doesn’t get diaper rash from it and it doesn’t seem to bother him so I’m going to go with it for now. Kyle changes his diapers instantly at the sign of a little pee, but those things add up so I refuse to change his diaps every 30 minutes.

3. When Dean stirs at night, I let him fuss until he goes back to sleep. At this point, I know he’s not hungry so I pop a paci in his mouth and hope for the best before jumping up to feed him. It seems to be working because he’s been sleeping 10-11 hours/night this week – See, my bad mom tricks actually work sometimes ;)

4. I have yet to instill a nap schedule in our house. Le sigh. This will probably come back to bite me in a few months.

5. When I need to get something done, I use Baby Einstein as a distraction. GASP. Screen time. BAD MOM. Ehhhhh, it’s not like I’m setting him down in front of Days of Our Lives… and he gets to learn about words and music and shapes and colors and trucks and airplanes and all that jazz for 20 or so minutes while doing tummy time. Things could be worse.

6. Sometimes Kyle gives him a bottle at night when I decide I want to have an extra glass of vino with dinner. Hey, I’m not pumping for no reason, peeps! In my defense, our freezer is stocked to the top with food for Dean so we do need to use some of it up ;) And moms need wine for sanity every once in a while, mmmkay?

7. If Dean is having a screaming fit while I’m driving – thank goodness they are few and far between and only when he’s hangry, I’ll turn the music up slightly. It makes me less anxious since it kind of blends away his cries and it actually helps to calm him down more often than not. Thank you T Swift and everyone else on my XM station ;)

Bad mom confessions – GO.

A random Thursday post

Happy Thursday! After waking up with Dean at 4:30 this morning, I’m shockingly not tired… Actually, the truth is, I know I’ll be more tired if I go back to bed at this point and staying up to get some work done is a good excuse to take a few naps later on today ;)

Since it has been a super long time since I’ve linked up with Ms. Amanda for a Thinking Out Loud post, I figured that I’d stay up and share a few of my random thoughts with y’all today.

1. I saw this shirt on Insta yesterday and needed it. Like NEED NEED NEED NEEDED IT. So I bought it, LOL. #impulsebuyer I think the next time I brunch will be for Kyle’s Father’s Day celebration – it’ll be crazy I tell ya – but you better bet I’ll be partaking in a mimosa… and wearing this tee. Maybe I can find a matching one for Dean, but with milk instead of mimosa ;) PS. Check out The Trendy Sparrow’s Etsy shop – She has super fun items. I secretly (or not so secretly…) want them all!

2. Y’all know I’m not a huge fan of mint flavored goodies. However, my good friends from over at 50 States in a Year sent me a box of treats last week (thanks Katie and Sam!!) and they included the new Quest Bar flavor. I tried it yesterday and it was actually better than I expected! I couldn’t eat this flavor daily, but I definitely wouldn’t turn it down. Maybe my mint-y taste buds are changing…

3. Poor Dean has an infected hang nail. His little finger had been a little red for a few days so I called his ped to see if it was something I should be worried about. Turns out, you have to be careful with those things when they’re so little! He is on liquid antibiotics and will hopefully be better in no time… Random comment on his medicine – The pharmacist asked me if it was okay that it was “fruity gum” flavored. I gave her the oddest look. Umm… he’s 3 weeks old, I am fairly certain that he doesn’t care, ha! PS – Any mom friends have suggestions on how to cut a baby’s fingernails?! I tried and he SCREAMS. The doctor said I should file them but that seems more difficult? HELPPP.

4. I really want to splurge on a Title Nine sports bra for when I resume my running game. Why must they be so pricey?!? I’m just jaded by my super cheap Target sports bras (that offer no support, I might add)… I keep watching for a sale but haven’t had any luck yet – Hopefully soon!

5. I need to make these bars ASAP. I’ve been drooling over them ever since I came across the recipe on Pinterest!

6. I’m a pretty lame guest entertainer these days. I feel kinda guilty but then I remember that I am waking up every 2-3 hours to feed a small human, so excusing myself to go to bed (or feed the guy – he eats much more often in the evening right before bed!) at 8pm or randomly nap throughout the day or not wanting to leave the house is totally acceptable. Right?

7. I love this photo. That is all <3

Tell me something random about your week! Did you do anything spur of the moment? Any impulse purchasers out there? Favorite Quest Bar flavor?

Confessions, Part XI

It’s been a hot minute since I wrote a confessions post… I just checked my archives and it was back at the beginning of September before I moved to Naples, and before I knew I was pregnant. Woah mama. Time to catch up on some confessions with Ms. Amanda this lovely Thursday.

Confession #1 – I hate Comcast. Their service. Their prices. The fact that they are a monopoly but can still manage to operate a business <– What the heck, how is this even legal?! Sigh. Alas, we will still be using them for our internet (basically by force as we have no other option…) but we’re excited to be trying Sling TV for our cable provider. $25/month for all of the major cable channels including an extra sports package for the boys?! Heck yes!

If only I could, I would drink an entire bottle of vino while talking with their customer service, LOL.

Confession #2 – One of the favorite parts of my day has always been checking the mail. Bills, cards from family/friends, packages, junk mail – It doesn’t matter, I LOVE IT. For the first time in my adult life I will have a real life mailbox in front of my house and I am SO EXCITED. Yes, I’m lame. But really, who doesn’t love the surprise a good mail day brings?!

Confession #3 – I don’t understand the hype around maternity photos. No offense to anyone who takes them, but the last thing I want right now is photo evidence of my expanding butt and Kyle gently rubbing and/or kissing my stomach. LOL. It makes me gag just thinking about it! Plus, some of the photos I’ve seen are a bit, ummm… shall I say, ridiculous? Posing in a bikini on a surf board? Mini skirts and high heels with a crop top? Awkward cuddling with a belly? “Classy” topless photos. Yeah. Thanks but no thanks! Maternity photos and/or future family photos came as an option with our newborn package and I’m so happy to report that we selected the family photo option for later this fall ;)

If I were to have a maternity photo session, I would wear a crop top that said this – BAHAHAHA. #thetruthhurts

Confession #4 – On the topic of pregnancy, people are reallyyyyy nice to pregnant women here in Naples. Maybe it’s because they’re snowbirds or grandparents or love babies or are just generally nice people, but everyone now smiles at me when they see me out and about. I figure it’s because I finally look pregnant… or I’m waddling and they feel sorry for me ;) I was moving boxes into our new house the other day and a couple of the guys working on our house were appalled and wouldn’t let me carry anything else inside. While the gesture was very kind of them, I wanted to say that I’m JUST pregnant and not totally incapacitated for the next few weeks. Oh well, I guess I should enjoy it while it lasts!

Confession #5 – I think I’ve confused all of you with my random moving photos on Insta. No, we’re not quite yet moved into the new house – Tomorrow is our movin’ official day! I dread packing and unpacking boxes so I have been taking carload by carload over this week. I’ve also been taking care of some of the smaller things before we move big items in… washer/dryer were delivered on Monday, our kitchen appliances are being delivered today, pest control has been taken care of, Internet and cable have been scheduled (see confession #1), roofers are done, our plantation shutters are being installed tomorrow and, obviously, the dreaded wall and flooring have been replaced! The movers arrive tomorrow to move our big items (think – beds, dresser, sofa, etc.) and then we will be IN. Wahoo! I am hoping our furniture looks good in the new place and that we will be settled sooner rather than later. Let’s be real though, we’ll be unpacked and organized by Monday if I have my way…

Confession #6 – Does anyone else get disgusted by using anything in a new house/apartment that hasn’t been professionally cleaned? I know I sure do! We weren’t able to schedule the cleaning company I liked before our move in date so they are coming Monday to give the house a good scrub down. Until then, I will be showering at the gym or at the apartment ;) I think the fact that the house sat empty for quite a few months (and that sewage backed up into the master bathroom during our renovation) also gives me the ick factor, LOL. I bleached the bathroom a few times, but still won’t be using it until Tuesday!

Alright, time to get back to moving! Have a wonderful Thursday :)

Tell me one of your deepest, darkest confessions!

Pregnancy Thoughts #1

You guys ROCK. Like seriously rock. Thank you SO much for all of your recommendations on yesterday’s post! I think I got every comment replied to but if not, I will be getting there shortly. I added the Chicco KeyFit 30 car seat, a Graco Pack ‘n Play and the Aden and Anais swaddlers to our registry and kept the Medela pump and BOB stroller on there as well. Also, apparently witch hazel is the way to go! I’ll be on the lookout for it over the next few months. And I’m hoping For Two Fitness has good Black Friday sales! I’ll be getting their tank after y’all said it was awesome. I’m sure I’ll have more questions as the time passes and I sincerely appreciate all of the time and effort y’all took answering each of my questions.

Now, continuing on with baby week here on Olives minus the Wine ;)

I don’t plan on doing a preggo update each week (I’ll still take photos weekly but plan on posting updates on a monthly basis… I don’t think that much changes each week honestly. If it does, I’ll post more often!) nor do I plan on doing these “Pregnancy Thoughts” posts weekly. Buttttt, I have a lot of thoughts and have had a few questions about how I’m feeling and exercise and AdvoCare while pregnant so I thought I’d get them out today, especially since Amanda is hosting Thinking Out Loud :)

Also, sorry for the novel. I promise to get back to my regularly scheduled (aka – doesn’t take you an hour to read…) blogging tomorrow!

1. I’m never registering for a marathon again. Kidding… kind of ;) The first time I register for a marathon, we move to Chicago. The second time, we move to Florida AND I get knocked up. I don’t even want to think what a third one would add to the list…

2. On the topic of marathons… YES, I did injure my knee. It wasn’t a fake injury to get out of running the marathon because I was preggo. Actually, I made the decision not to run the race before I even knew I was pregnant. It’s practically impossible to prove this, but my OBGYN thinks my knee pain was due to the increase in hormones during the first tri. My knee starting hurting a week or two after I got pregnant and stopped around weeks 12-13. Seems like too much of a coincidence to not find some sort of correlation there!

3. Getting all of the fitness thoughts out of the way… Yes, I can still run. I can swim. I can spin. I can do yoga. I can do BODYPUMP. My doctor is a-okay with all of the activities I did prior to becoming pregnant. And heck, I was running 30+ miles/week the first month and everything looks great so far. I don’t need to worry about heart rate or sweating or anything like that, the only thing he told me to be cautious of is overheating… so no hot yoga. The heart rate worry is apparently a myth (there isn’t any true science behind it) plus, he said that the more fit you are, the faster your heart beats once you start working out so there isn’t a good method of determining what is too high for some women vs others. I’m just listening to my body and stopping if I’m overly tired which hasn’t been an issue yet. I have realized that I need to eat a HUGE breakfast (like 700-800 calories) before a workout or I get lightheaded and I typically try to take a nap post-workout if I can.

4. Overall, I’ve been feeling okay the past few months! I’m super thankful for this because me + nausea do not mix. The only thing I’ve noticed is that I’ve been extremely exhausted. It really hit me after moving to Florida. I was sleeping 11-12 hours/night and taking a 2-3 hour nap each day. Wowzers. Growing a human is no joke. As long as I ate every 2-3 hours during the first tri, it kept the nausea away (my appetite has decreased dramatically now that I’m into the second tri… if you ever needs tips on how to eat 3,000-3,500 calories/day, let me know LOL!). I’ve been noticing more lightheadedness now that I’m a little further along as well. Apparently this lasts throughout the rest of the pregnancy – yay. #sarcasm Also, I’m very very thankful I have been working from home (THANK YOU Advo!) so I’ve had the ability to rest when I’ve needed to… Seriously, maternity leave needs to begin when women find out they are pregnant and last for a full 2 years.

5. I have been feeling well BUT I cannot read recipe posts. Like they make me gag. I don’t know what it is. The pictures are fine, I love food and I’ve never been a picky eater (not even now) but I cannot read about food to save my life. So, if you write mostly about recipes, I’ve been absent lately, haha. The only exception to this rule is Katie’s recipes. I could eat everything on her blog – helloooo Crockpot Chicken Cream Cheese Chili and Special K Bars!

6. It’s amazing I only gained 1 pound during the first trimester. Frankly, I don’t care AT ALL how much weight I gain during the next few months. But, I was eating so much during the first few weeks that I thought I would at least gain 10 pounds – haha! I actually tracked it one day because I was curious and I logged in almost 3,200 calories… and that was a typical day. You really only need 300 extra calories each day when you’re preggo but I am super active so I know my body needs 2,000 calories + 300 + whatever I burn off while working out each day. So honestly, 3,200 is probably a fairly accurate assessment of my energy needs right now.

7. As for cravings, the only thing I’ve really been craving is cream cheese. I legit go through at least one tub per week. And it is amazing, haha! I mix it into pasta sauce, eat it with bagels, put it on English muffins… once I even put it on Nacho Cheese Doritos. Don’t judge. That combo is amazeballs but I’ve actually made Kyle promise that he will never bring home a bag of Doritos again (even if I’m crying and screaming in a hormonal rage…) because I cannot control myself around them and they are not good for me or the baby and there are many other avenues for scooping cream cheese into my mouth… like with a spoon ;) I also really like egg-cheese-bacon sandwiches on English muffins. Yes, I’ve put cream cheese (and butter) in them and that only adds to their amazingness. And I’ve only gained a pound… I told you growing a human was no joke! Oh, and the only thing I don’t really like right now is froyo. It’s a sad, sad story. Sweets just aren’t my thang these days. The proof are the 2 bags of Reese’s in my freezer that I have no desire to touch. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!

8. AdvoCare makes you fertile <– KIDDING. I am not making a medical claim here (Just clarifying for all of the legal stuff out there…) What I do think makes you fertile is being at a healthy weight, being active and fit, eating clean foods and filling in any gaps with high quality supplements (whether you think so or not, you do have nutritional gaps in your diet unless you are harvesting ALL of your produce from your own garden that is grown on the most fertile soil on Earth and you’re eating everything that you harvest within an hour or two… just sayin’). I’ve always been fairly healthy but AdvoCare has really reinforced good habits in my day-to-day life so I’m happy that I’ll be able to pass that onto Mitchell Junior once he is here :)

photo 5 (92)

9. As for how I’m fitting AdvoCare products into my pregnancy… First, I’d recommend taking all of your supplements (Advo or not) to your OBGYN for approval. I took mine in and he okayed them. Anyways, you can have one Spark/day while pregnant and breastfeeding. I’m also incorporating Rehydrate (great for workouts!), CorePlex + Iron (great prenatal for you mamas out there!), OmegaPlex (good for you and your baby’s brain), AdvoBars and MRS. I have trouble with pills right now (they make me gag) so I’m only taking the necessities, but you can also take Catalyst, my all-time favorite Advo product! You can contact me if you have any questions about this. There are a lot of AdvoBabies on my team and any of the mamas would be happy to provide advice!

Life jacket

10. I’m not worried about Mitchell. Believe it or not, he’s actually really good with puppies and small children. He will stand still and let them jump on/pet his face without any issues. Needless to say, I know you need to be careful with any animal in the house so I’ve been doing some reading on pets and babies. Apparently, you’re supposed to practice with a doll, so Kyle and I will be getting a life-sized baby doll for the purposes of training Mitchell, LOL. I’ll use the baby-wearing wrap (it’ll be good practice for that too!) when doing day-to-day activities so Mitchell can get used to me paying attention to another “animal.” I will also practice swaddling the doll and holding it while watching TV and placing it on a blanket on the floor. I want to let Mitchell know that it is okay to smell and lick the doll (FYI – I’m not a germaphobe and do not plan on bleaching the apartment before baby arrives. I’ve read a bunch of studies and babies/kids that grow up with a little dirt/germs/pet hair are much less likely to have allergies and end up with a stronger immune system sooooo a less than perfect house and a baby that gets licked by the dog is what you can expect to see if you come to visit!) but that it is not okay to lie on it or wrestle with it or try to overly cuddle it. I’m going to have Kyle practice the same things because I’m more worried about Mitchell being jealous when Kyle’s with the baby. Mitchell LOVES Kyle but he has to know that he can’t jump on or wrestle with Kyle when he has the baby. Right now, I’m letting Mitchell sniff everything we get for the baby. But he isn’t going to be allowed in a crib or a bassinet (he’d probably break it anyways, LOL) or a stroller or a car seat. Poor furball is going to have a rude awakening come May but I’m sure the two boys will be BFF’s in a year or two :)

Phew! And to think, I have about 20 more thoughts ;) I’ll be doing round #2 in a couple of weeks – I hope you come back!

I don’t really have any questions today, I think I got them all out yesterday, but as always, any tips/ideas are welcome!

Thinking, thinking, thinking.

It’s been a hot minute since I linked up with Ms. Amanda so I am back again today to share some random thoughts running through my head.

1. Meet Jorge. He’s an 8-week old puppy that is currently living at the Naples Humane Shelter. I want him… and by want, I mean need. I asked Mitchell if he wanted a little brother and he gave me a sideways glance. I’ll take that as a no. But this puppy, squeal! And this is why I can never volunteer at an animal shelter… Kyle and I would live in a madhouse of animals ;)

2. I miss fall. And I think I’ll miss winter for maybeeee 2.7 seconds until I remember that snow is awful and I hate all things cold. It’s been an awesome fall in the Midwest this year, but I think once winter rolls around, I’ll be much happier that I’m here… and not in 10 feet of snow.

3. I’m working on my Christmas list for this year and I don’t have much on it. I need some ideas. What are you asking Santa for this December?

4. I’m obviously a huge proponent of eating real, whole foods (Hello, y’all know I’m obsessed with Advo and that’s their main focus!) but it really annoys me when that is all someone eats. And it bothers me even more when they call someone out for not “eating clean.” Umm… hello, sometimes a gal just wants a bowl of froyo and some fries and a big glass of vino! Plus, it isn’t feasible to eat 100% clean all of the time… think traveling (unless you pack all of your food which is odd to me), eating at restaurants, family meals, etc. That’s why there is an 80/20 rule, it’s called balance, peeps. Live a little ;) #endrant

5. I haven’t really been into pumpkin anything this year. I know, lame. I am blaming the weather in Florida. With my luck, I’ll want all things pumpkin when it starts to cool down and only peppermint flavors are available. #firstworldprobs

And I think that’s all for today! Thanks to Amanda for the link up and I’ll see y’all tomorrow.

What is your favorite season/least favorite season? Fall/Winter

What is on your Christmas list this year? You’ll have to wait to see mine, I have a post coming up!

Confessions, Part IX

You guys.

It’s been two months (TWO!) since I’ve posted my last confessions. Needless to say, I’m linking up for some Thinking Out Loud partyin’ this Thursday with Amanda :)

Confession #1 – The Chicago stop light camera got me and I’m so ashamed! I rarely drive… I get behind the wheel maybe once per week and when I do I’m overly cautious because well, I never drive! Anyways, a few weeks ago a girlfriend and I were driving home from work and apparently I ran a red light. What the…?!?! Kyle and I received a photo in the mail of the ol’ Subaru running through a red (Barely though, I was just crossing the pedestrian walk on the other side of the intersection.) on the road I took home from work that Thursday afternoon. My friend and I don’t recall even pushing it with a red light so I think the traffic light gods have in it for me ;)

speeding ticket

That $100 COULD HAVE been spent on Lulu or Advo but now it will go to the city. Boo. And y’all wonder why I never drive ;)

Confession #2 – I’m certain I’ve said this before, but I love (like LOVE) balancing my checkbook. I like knowing exactly how much money I have in my account and if anything were ever to go wrong, I’d like to know before my bank alerted me. Plus it’s fun going through all of my receipts and figuring out how much I spent on groceries, clothing, Target runs, etc. Type A much?

photo 1

Confession #3 – I just realized that I’m in Week 6 of my marathon training. That means I’m 1/3 of the way through! Holy moly, where has the time gone? Unfortunately, the first third of the training is the easy part and while I may be 1/3 done with my training time, I am probably only 1/10 complete with my training distance. I need to give my footsies a little pep talk ;)

Confession #4Amy is visiting my city this weekend and I am PUMPED!! I love my Canadian bloggers and I’m so ready to brunch it up (or run it up or shop it up or whatever!) with this girl. I’m also secretly happy that she’s a super healthy eater because I’ll still be mid-challenge ;)

Confession #5 – After living in Chicago for close to a year now, I’m still confused as to why the interstates have human names. Can’t we just say 90 and 94?! I get more lost than I already am when someone tells me to take the Eisenhower or the Dan Ryan or the Kennedy. Can any fellow Chicagoans help a sister out and explain the insanity? ;)

photo (101)

Confession #6 – I love the above quote. Change is good. It is important to LIVE life and not just go through the motions. So many of us have hopes and dreams and passions and goals for the future but don’t “get after it” for lack of a better phrase. What do you want out of life? What is stopping YOU from getting there? Our time here is finite, so make the most of it. Just a little inspirational pep talk for y’all today!

Now it’s your turn, what are your confessions today?

What is one of your goals for the future and how are you gettin’ after it?

Confessions, Part VIII

Hiya! How’s your week been so far?

It’s been a busy one for me (hello piles of work!), but it feels so good to be back in my own kitchen and getting back into a workout routine. My Fitbit steps definitely suffered the past few weeks between being sick and traveling.

As I mentioned on Tuesday, I am popping in today and linking up with Amanda’s Thinking Out Loud series for some confessions action :)

Confession 1: I don’t understand the point of toilet seat covers. Seriously. They’re pretty much just a waste of trees. I know my California friends will disagree, but for real… our trees could be used for much better things (like living in the ground!). And, in my short 29 years, I’ve never caught anything from a toilet… #justsaying

Confession 2: I still hate flying. Nothing groundbreaking here… ;)

Confession 3: There seems to be a recent backlash against the medical field and it really really really annoys me. Yes, the best form of medicine is a healthy diet and exercise. Yes, sometimes we are over-medicated as a society. But guess what, we live a heck of a lot longer than the generations before us because of medicine and it’s pretty darn miraculous if you think about it. Premature babies have a chance at life because of healthcare. We don’t have to suffer through scary diseases like Polio or Measles or Rabies because of vaccinations. Your grandpa (or uncle or sister…) gained a few extra years because of a pacemaker. Obviously there are things that can be improved upon, but most of these have more to do with society than the medical field – for example the overuse of antibiotics and living a healthy lifestyle.

Confession 4: Work travel is not as glamorous as it seems. To be quiet honest (that’s what confessions are for!), I had to hold back a few snarky comments when people were telling me to have fun in Florida earlier in the week. LOL! Work travel should actually occur in locations where the weather is awful because it’s pretty much a tease. You’re sitting inside all. day. long. while it’s gorgeous outside. Cruel and unusual punishment I tell ya!

Confession 5: Sticking to the whole work theme, my next trip will be the week leading up to Blend to… Orlando! I am actually really pumped, minus the whole work thing, haha… I’ve never been to Disney World (or any Disney-themed park for that matter) before and I’m really hoping that my team will be able to make it to the park one evening. It’ll be worth being tired the next day if I get to meet Mickey!

Confession 6: I’m working on my marathon training plan and it’s freaking me out. I don’t want to over-train and get burnt out, but I also don’t want to under-train and not be ready come race day. I’m sharing my plan next week and I’d love any feedback you fellow marathoners out there want to share! I don’t officially start training until June 8th, so I have time to make adjustments if needed :)

I think that’s all of the confessions I have for today. I hope y’all have a great rest of your week and a fabulous weekend! See ya on the flip side (aka: Monday) :)

Do you travel for your job? This is the first job that has required me to travel.

Who is your favorite Disney character? Ariel!

Do you use toilet seat covers in public restrooms? If you couldn’t tell by my above comment, nope. I don’t even think they had them in Iowa where I grew up!

Confessions, Part VII

Do you know what day is today?

Err… Becky, it’s Thursday.

Okay, yes. You’ve got me there. It is Thursday, BUT it’s also Confessions Thursday! I’m linking up with Amanda and bringing you some secret confessions for the last Thursday this April.

Or as Kyle would say, it’s the day you’re pretending to be Usher again.

Get it?! ;)

1. I haven’t worn makeup since Friday. Yep, it’s been a full week. I try not to wear it over the weekends if I don’t go out for dinner or drinks, and since I haven’t been feeling well this week, I just decided to skip it. Kyle actually prefers that I don’t wear it. (BTW, is that weird??) I don’t think anyone’s actually noticed either… except for the people at work that have told me I don’t look so hot. #thanks I am hoping it is because I’m actually sick and not because I look sick without makeup ;)

2. Dogs on steroids are the most annoying animals in existence! I gave Mitchell his final steroid pill for his injury last night and all I have to say is HALLELUJAH! Those things make him eat and drink like a maniac and therefore, make other things happen much more often than normal. #ifyaknowwhatimean  He’s whiny and needy and all I have to say is that he is NEVER going back on those again.

3. I’m a completely different person in the spring/summer months than I am during the winter. The winter makes me mean and resentful and crabby unlike the summer when I am happy and free-spirited and an all-around nice person. I think this means I need to move somewhere where it is summer year round. We’ll see how Winter 2015 treats me before I make any crazy decisions…

4. Don’t get me wrong, I love when Kyle is home during the week and not traveling, but I also love having the bed to myself :) I sleep diagonally, spread out, and always find a cool place to put my feet. When he’s home, I’m always telling him to scoot over… even though I’m already sleeping in the middle. I think this means it’s time for us to upgrade to a king California king, that is!

5. I really hate WordPress’ new photo sizing/editing update. I am Type A therefore all of my photos must be the same (or at the least, very similar) sizes and this does not allow for me to do that! Argh… There have been many frustrations ever since I made the latest update. I just want my 60% sized image option backkkkkk. #firstworldproblems

6. I have been awful at thanking each of you that have donated to my marathon charity – Team Paws. You will each get a personalized email and/or letter (If I’m creepy and know your address, haha!) thanking you for your donation once I get my act together!!! BUT I do want to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU because I am already 80% to my goal of $1,250 and 50% to my stretch goal of $2,000!! You guys rock my socks off! I have until October 5th to continue to raise money, and can’t wait to see how much I donate to this fabulous organization. If you want to read more about Team Paws, head on over here for more information.

Your turn, tell me a confession!

What are your favorite and least favorite seasons? Fall and winter – although I like ALL seasons for a short amount of time, anything over a month of winter is just too much for me!

What size of bed do you sleep in? Kyle and I currently have a queen but for the sake of our marriage, we will be trading up to a king (or larger) once we move into a bigger place!

It’s okay…

It’s okay if…

It’s okay if you manage to hold it together during a rough week only to let something small and insignificant – like smudging your new pedicure – break the final straw. It’s also okay if the only thing you can utter when your husband asks what is wrong is that your new pedicure is now ruined. This event may have happened recently ;)

It’s okay if you want to lose weight and choose to go on a diet. There has been a recent push against dieting in the HLB world (which I totally understand, we should all love ourselves regardless of our physical appearance) but it is your body and you have the freedom to do what you want with  it. In my opinion, and considering the increasing rate of obesity in the United States and the impact it is having on our nation, a healthy diet and exercise is an awesome way to kick start your journey to a healthier body – both mentally and physically.

It’s okay if you eat the same thing for lunch every single day for a week. (ahem, Chipotle…) Sometimes the only thing that will quench that craving are multiple servings over many days ;)

It’s okay if you order things online just so you can receive a package in the mail once or twice a week. Who doesn’t love mail especially when it involves a package?!

It’s okay if the only reason you offer to take the dog out in -20 degree weather is because you’re just 20 steps away from your 10K daily goal.

It’s okay if you disagree with your best friend. The world would be a boring place if we all had the exact same opinions about everything. Just avoid conversations about politics or religion at happy hour if you value your friendship ;)

It’s okay if your materialistic and like to own nice things like purses and shoes and dresses and jewelry. We’re all motivated by different things in life and if your gorgeous necklace gets you up and out of bed in the morning and gives you the confidence to tackle a new day, then work those sparkles girl!

It’s okay if you want to wear the same outfit all weekend long. Changing out of those wunder unders is just too much work on a Saturday ;)

Thanks to Carly for the “It’s okay” theme inspiration and to Amanda for hosting the Thinking Out Loud link up!

Now it’s your turn – It’s okay if…
